Provides leadership and direction for the residence halls in a neighborhood. Supervises and evaluates live-in professional staff and provides leadership for undergraduate, graduate and full-time staff indirect reports. Acts as liaison between campus partners, including the Engagement Center, and the residential units within the neighborhood. Other duties include, but not limited to: chair of committees and liaison for institutional committees; participate in on-call duty support and respond to crisis situations; coordinates with conduct and care staff behavior and/or mental health issues; implementation of the residential curriculum in the neighborhood; implement initiatives and develop neighborhood culture that prioritizes diversity, equity and inclusion, and belonging; engage with neighborhood collaborates frequently with the neighborhood Facilities Manager, operations team, leadership in Culinary Services, and department administration ; participates in duty rotation/crisis response management; develops and administers budgets for neighborhood; works collaboratively with other units in Student Life and Engagement, Academic Affairs, and MSU Department of Police & Public Safety; disciplines staff as needed with guidance from Human Resources.
All positions in SLE are designated as critical status. In the event of a university closure, modification, or suspension of operations due to snow or other emergency condition, persons in this position are expected to make all reasonable attempts to report to work as scheduled for the duration of the closure/suspension. If a person has an approved remote work agreement to work a portion of their normally scheduled work hours remotely, they may be called upon to work on-site to serve the MSU community.
Minimum RequirementsKnowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one to two years of post-bachelor degree work such as a Master's in Higher Education Administration, Counseling or related field; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible and expansive work experience in residence hall administration, counseling, human relations, and program development; knowledge of legal, ethical, and affirmative action practices for staff recruitment, selection, and appraisal; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
Master's degree in college student personnel, higher education administration, counseling, psychology, social work, or related field; an interest in and 3-5 years of progressively responsible supervision experience; excellent interpersonal (verbal and written) communication skills; experience working directly with people from a diverse racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, LGBTQIA+, and gender backgrounds; experience working with college students and having knowledge of issues impacting college students, student development theory, and its application to behavioral and medical/mental-health issues; experience with student learning and residential curriculum implementation in a residence life setting; experience with collaboration and partnership with other agencies or units; experience with recruitment, selection, and training of staff; experience working with spreadsheets, databases, and cloud-based software; ability to flex communication style to multiple cultural environments and multiple social identities; experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, including [communities of color], in the consideration of impacts and outcomes of a decision-making process; an understanding of the concepts of institutional and structural racism and bias and their impact on underserved and underrepresented communities; experience providing leadership and support to student incidents and serving in an on-call response capacity.
