Effectively lead team responsible for maintaining the general ledger and the preparation, consolidation and distribution of all financial statements and regulatory reports, both internal and external. Provides oversight and preparation for necessary financial transactions and reconciliations. This position includes leading various levels of staff towards the completion of the objectives. Explains financial results and their implications to company management and employees.
Primary Focus: responsible for all GAAP/SAP based reporting for AF Group.
RESPONSIBILITIES/TASKS
Supervises the preparation of consolidated financial statements prepared in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) / statutory accounting principles (SAP).
Leads the consolidation processes for all entities within the Enterprise, including ensuring all intercompany transactions and reporting are executed correctly.
Supervises financial regulatory reporting and compliance for all entities, at both a state and federal level.
Supervises the completion and reconciliation of general ledger accounts and entries pertaining to assigned financial areas.
Finance liaison to finance and business management to assist in resolving open financial issues and complete all ad-hoc requests.
To become a subject matter expert in relation to the department/business unit being supported and to ascertain the financial reporting requirements related to those attributes.
Manages and facilitates audits, including responding to inquiries from internal and external auditors.
Collaborate with related finance division departments and external reporting teams.
Monitors new financial reporting and regulatory requirements, including interpretations of GAAP/SAP guidance.
Routinely coordinate and communicate with various levels of leadership within the company, accounting and other staff at the parent, and third-party business partners.
Primary liaison with BCBSM to ensure all financial reporting is accurately reported on the Parent's financial statements, this includes participating in workgroups, meetings and planning sessions on a regular basis.
Supports continuous improvement initiatives.
Develops and documents new or changed policies and procedures to provide better financial management, to maximize efficiency and improve internal control.
Assists in other areas within Financial Reporting as needed.
Maintains confidentiality of information processed.
Supervisory: Directly supervises exempt and non-exempt staff in multiple locations, including remote field employees. Carries out responsibilities in accordance with company policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, selecting, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints; and resolving problems. This position description identifies the responsibilities and tasks typically associated with the performance of the position. Other relevant essential functions may be required.
EDUCATION OR EQUIVALENT EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance is required. Continuous learning, as defined by the Company's learning philosophy, is required. CPA is preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum five (5) years of relevant accounting experience. One-year (1) prior leadership experience is preferred. Insurance industry accounting is required. Experience with multi-entity accounting is required.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES (SKA) REQUIRED:
Advanced knowledge of, and the ability to accurately apply, GAAP and SAP and practices for property and casualty insurance companies.
Ability to prepare, interpret and communicate financial reports and statements.
Ability to interpret, apply and communicate regulatory guidance.
Demonstrated leadership ability and team building skills to effectively supervise staff and interact will all levels of management.
Knowledge of financial systems, process flows and internal controls.
Knowledge of activities, practices and terminology for property and casualty insurance companies.
Knowledge of audit process and ability to instruct staff as it relates to auditing procedures.
Ability to organize, analyze and interpret financial and management data to solve management and business problems.
Ability to conduct root cause analysis of various problem situations and address them or refer them for appropriate decision making.
Ability to manage projects effectively and efficiently.
Ability to manage organizational resources effectively and efficiently.
Ability to effectively lead, counsel, and motivate both various levels of staff, from technical/clerical to senior-level professional.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed in an office setting with no unusual hazards. Travel is required.
PAY RANGE
Actual compensation decision relies on the consideration of internal equity, candidate's skills and professional experience, geographic location, market and other potential factors. It is not standard practice for an offer to be at or near the top of the range, and therefore a reasonable estimate for this role is between $77,300 and $129,400
