The Siebel School of Computing and Data Science in the Grainger College of Engineering at the University of Illinois invites applications for multiple full-time teaching positions to support the continued expansion of our teaching activity in Urbana-Champaign, in Chicago, and online. Anchored by a transformative $50M gift from alumnus Tom Siebel, in July 2024 the University of Illinois established the Siebel School of Computing and Data Science, encompassing all the degree programs, faculty, staff, operations, and facilities of the former Department of Computer Science, including the top #5 ranked computer science undergraduate and graduate programs, and the cross-campus partnerships involved in the nation-leading CS+X and X+DS blended degree programs.


We welcome applications from talented and innovative instructors able to teach across the computer science curriculum and are particularly interested in candidates who can teach algorithms and theory, and introductory courses in computer science. Applicants for Teaching Professor (all ranks) or Lecturer positions need to have (or are expected to receive) a PhD or equivalent terminal degree in computer science or a closely related field. Applicants for Instructor or Clinical Faculty (i.e., Professor of Practice working title) positions are required to have (or expected to receive) a Bachelor's degree or equivalent undergraduate degree in Computer Science or a related field. Initial appointments will be on three- to five-year contracts renewed annually, at a rank commensurate with prior experience, and at a highly competitive salary based on qualifications. Successful applicants will join a large and active teaching faculty community. The Siebel School of Computing and Data Science is one of the top-ranked schools in the country , and attracts large numbers of motivated students to our courses from departments across campus. The school's nearly 30 teaching faculty embrace the challenges and rewards of teaching at scale, but generally do so by teaching many students across a small number of courses. In Fall 2024, teaching faculty taught an average of around 400 students, but only one course. Many instructors choose to teach the same course for multiple semesters, allowing them to develop deep mastery of their subject while supporting long-term investments in innovative pedagogy.


Our instructional faculty are full partners and play leading roles in our mission to deliver innovative and inclusive computing education. They have primary responsibility for designing and delivering the undergraduate core, as well as the Illinois Computing Accelerator for Non-Specialists (iCAN ) , but teach courses at all levels within the undergraduate and graduate degree programs and online through our partnership with Coursera . Instructional faculty also engage in other activities that support the university's educational mission. These include leadership and service at the school, college, campus, or international level; collaborations that develop new courses or curricula; student mentoring and advising; creating systems and tools that support novel educational approaches; data analysis; community outreach; and research in computer science education or other areas of computer science.


Teaching activities are well-supported by the school, college, and university. Instructional faculty have access to computational and laboratory resources, excellent graduate and undergraduate course staff, and summer funding to support course development. The Academy for Excellence in Engineering Education (AE3) offers grants to support educational innovation, and multiple Siebel School teaching faculty are currently working on projects supported by these awards . Illinois faculty pioneered the computer-based testing center (CBTF) , a novel facility that enables regular computerized assessment in a controlled environment and is heavily used throughout our program.


The University of Illinois has one of the strongest Computing and Data Science departments in the country, with more than 120 core faculty, over 2500 undergraduate majors and 2600 graduate students across 20 degree programs. Our flagship undergraduate program in The Grainger College of Engineering includes nearly 38% women in our freshman class, and our innovative CS+X programs combine a strong grounding in CS with training in the arts and sciences across 16 different disciplines. This is a renewable, non-tenure track faculty position appointed on a 9-month service basis paid over 12 months. Salary is negotiable and commensurate with experience and qualifications. The budgeted salary range for this position varies by academic rank with the typical salary ranges as follows: $98,000 - $140,000 at the Instructor/Lecturer level, $140,000 - $160,000 at the Teaching Assistant Professor or Clinical Assistant Professor level, $160,000 - $180,000 at the Teaching Associate Professor or Clinical Associate Professor level, and $180,000 - $250,000 at the Teaching Professor or Clinical Professor level.
