The University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, has an exciting full time opportunity for a Phlebotomist 3 (H) in Miami, Florida.
The Phlebotomist 3 (H) draws and collects blood samples from patients, verifies records, and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis. An employee in this position conducts interviews, takes vital signs, and tests blood samples. The Phlebotomist 3 (H) relates to and interacts well with patients by taking into consideration their age-specific, physical, and psychosocial needs. The incumbent also uses the laboratory and hospital systems to accession data, prepare samples for shipping, and perform other appropriate system functions.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs patient phlebotomy by prescribed technique outlined in the phlebotomy procedure manual.
Processes hematology and oncology patients as priority.
Works on pre-accession specimens and matches and organizes orders and labels for the day.
Follows patient identification process.
Answers questions and resolves problems pertaining to test requisitions, specimen requirements, test additions, priority changes, and patient results.
Maintains adequate inventory levels as per protocol and rotates previous stock.
Maintains required files and log systems in a neat and accurate manner.
Assists supervisor in recording statistics and generates reports.
Processes cancellations, credits, and additions of test procedures.
Picks up, unpacks, dates and stores in a timely manner according to manufacturers' recommendation.
Checks packing slips, verifies number of items received, documents, and gives copy to supervisor/designee.
Removes, empty boxes and recyclable material and disposes of them as per Standard Operating Procedures. Prepares biohazard containers for use and then disposal.
Prepares samples for shipping.
Assures accuracy and completeness throughout the patient registration process. Follows up with patient's physician to request missing information or to clarify test orders appropriately and in a timely manner.
Assists in the maintenance of hardware by changing paper, labels, and/or printer ribbons when necessary.
Serves as a lead/back-up when Supervisor is unavailable.
Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent
Certification and Licensing:
Certification in relevant specialty or field
Experience:
Minimum 3 years of relevant experience

Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

Department Specific Functions
Works within the Clinical Research Services Unit to draw blood on study patients.
Ability to handle multiple clinical trials with several principal investigators.
Establishes/maintains contact with patients/participants, health care providers, community agencies, and study sponsors.
Obtains informed consent from patients/study participants and documents the process in alignment with policies and procedures.
Obtain and maintain all relevant certifications related to clinical research
Flexibility to travel to all Bascom Palmer Eye Institute sites, as needed
