Description: Job Summary

The position of Computational Engineer is designed to strengthen and enrich computational teaching and learning at SEAS in a broad set of areas. As part of the Computing in Engineering Education (CEE) team, you will work with SEAS faculty and teaching staff to develop and implement computational and simulation components in courses, train teaching fellows and students in various computational tools and software, and assist students with modeling and simulation in their design projects. We seek candidates who have a passion for teaching and advising students and student teams from diverse backgrounds and with various levels of knowledge of computation.

This is a term appointment through May 30, 2025, with a possibility of extension.

Position Description

  • Content development of simulation, modeling, and computational activities, including but not limited to class assignments, homework, tutorials, lectures, labs, and projects.
  • Teach engineering software tools, computational tools/techniques, and/or scientific programming to SEAS undergraduates.
  • As a member of the interdisciplinary team, work collaboratively with the Active Learning Labs (ALL) to reimagine and develop cutting-edge computational activities that bridge disciplines and hands-on supplement experiments.
  • Work collaboratively with other groups within Teaching and Learning, SEAS Computing, Harvard University Information Technology (HUIT), the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Research Computing (FASRC), and others to support and expand computation in the SEAS curriculum.
  • Manage, maintain, and collaborate on content for the CEE website.
  • Support the computational hardware and software needs of ALL and help provide technical support for the CEE Computer Lab.


Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Math, or a related technical/scientific field is required.
  • A minimum of two years of work experience in programming, engineering or science education, and/or data analysis. An advanced degree may count towards experience.
  • Programming skills with MATLAB, Python or a similar language.
  • Engineering software tools, such as COMSOL or other FEA tools.


Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Advanced degree in a related field is a plus (but not required).
  • Experience working in an educational environment, teaching, and mentoring preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects, strong organizational skills, creativity in problem-solving, and high self-motivation.
  • Strong interest in working on multidisciplinary coursework and projects.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in scientific or general programming. Contributions to or development of open-source code or software is a plus.
  • Proficiency in CAD software like Solidworks, Rhino, or similar is desirable
  • Familiarity using engineering software tools such as Lumerical, COMSOL, or other FEA tools to solve various types of electromagnetic and electromechanical problems is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Arduino (Arduino programming language and IDE) is a plus.
  • Familiarity or basic background in a subset of the following fields is ideal: computer science, data science, electrical engineering, and environmental engineering.
  • Familiarity with data science tools, such as data visualization, data cleaning and formatting, and various statistical modeling methods, is a plus.
  • Flexibility to be available outside a typical 9-5 work schedule on an occasional basis to meet the needs of faculty and students.
