For more information, visit: https://agriculture.okstate.edu/departments-programs/afs/Job Summary:Assist Senior Herd Manager with managing and utilizing feed commodities at the Dairy Cattle Center including mixing all rations, keeping fresh feed to milking cows at all times, conducting accurate and efficient feeding of all cattle, and utilizing current technologies and ideas to minimize waste and spoilage. Supervise graduate students conducting research at the Center. Schedule maintenance and keep records on vehicles and tractors. Assist manager in waste management planning. Assist in timed AI program, AI, herd health, difficult births, and facility maintenance. Assist in managing milking operations including milking the dairy herd, cleaning of parlor and milking equipment, and maintenance of milking equipment.On call to solve equipment, milking, and animal care problems that part-time student employees might have. Clean facilities after any movement in or out of the barn in all weather conditions, facilitate repairs to facilities and equipment at the Dairy Center, and communicate maintenance needs at the Dairy Center to the Dairy Center Manager. Assist with field days, judging contests, and other activities that frequently occur on weekends.Should have basic mechanical abilities to fix items around dairy. Required: Bachelor's in Animal Science or related area in Agriculture with 1 year related work experience.
Valid driver's license. Reliable transportation for travel connected with official duties. Reimbursement for official travel.If chosen applicant has no AI experience, the department will pay the cost of AI school when class is available after 60 days of being hired.
Knowledge of operating and maintaining farm machinery, computers, handling of dairy cattle and milking equipment.Be able to lift at least 100 pounds (newborn calf)
Preferred: Bachelor's in Animal Science, Agriculture
Prefer some work experiences with dairy cattle through informal (farm background) or formal work experiences.
