ONE-YEAR FIXED TERM POSITION




JOB PURPOSE:


The Deborah L. Rhode Center on the Legal Profession at Stanford Law School is looking for a Data Scientist to work across our research programs. This role will collaborate closely with teams of research fellows and students on projects the civil court system, access to justice, and transparency in state and federal courts. Under the direction of Rhode Center associated faculty and research affiliates, the role manage and analyze data critical to the Center's data-science research agenda focused on expanding access to justice and transparency in U.S. Courts. This position will report to Professor David Engstrom.




CORE DUTIES*:


  • In collaboration and under the direction of Rhode Center research team members, lead the Center's ongoing efforts to collect, manage, and structure large datasets from public sources.



  • Use cutting-edge natural language processing and machine learning tools to label high volumes of unstructured data and prepare for empirical analysis.



  • Conceptualize suitable empirical methodologies and models.



  • Develop algorithms to convert PDFs to analyzable data at scale. Conduct statistical analyses of complex datasets and interpretation of results.



  • Contribute original writing explaining data sources, analyses, and interpretation.



  • Where appropriate, have the opportunity to receive co-authorship on research papers.



  • Use reports and analyses to identify conflicting interpretations, make corrections/suggest solutions and determine root cause for data problems.



  • Collaborate with faculty and research staff on data collection and analysis methods.



  • Provide documentation based on audit and reporting criteria to faculty and research staff.



  • Communicate with government officials, grant agencies and industry representatives.

    Education & Experience:


    Bachelor's degree or a combination of education and relevant experience. Experience in a quantitative discipline (e.g., computer science, data science, statistics, engineering, mathematics, economics, or a related field).




    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Substantial experience with MS Office and analytical programs.



  • Strong writing and analytical skills.



  • Ability to prioritize workload.



  • ·Programming experience in Python, R, SQL, and/or other languages


  • Prior experience working with large datasets on remote servers or cloud services is preferred



  • Prior experience working with machine learning, especially involving classifiers, is preferred



  • Outstanding academic credentials and intellectual creativity



  • Eagerness to take initiative and solve intricate problems



  • Excellent time-management skills and ability to work effectively with minimal supervision



  • Exceptional research, analytical writing, and communication skills



  • Prior research experience and coursework in the empirical social sciences is preferred, but not required

  • The expected pay range for this position is $82,468 to $106,256 per annum (Stanford Region).

    The expected pay range for this position is $54,763 to $83,636 per annum (Remote Region).
