The Department of Physician Assistant Studies in the College of Health Professions and Human Services trains future Physician Assistants to be medical professionals who can provide excellent medical care across health care disciplines and settings. The Department offers a Master of Science degree in Physician Assistant Studies and prepares program graduates to provide evidence-based, holistic healthcare treatments and effectively utilize the latest medical technologies.
The Department is excited to invite applications for an innovative and distinguished scholar in the field of medical education to serve as the inaugural Dr. Marian R. Stuart '71 Endowed Professor of Medical Education. This position will begin on September 1, 2025.
Kean alumna Marian R. Stuart, Ph.D., has given Kean a transformative gift that will have a lasting impact on medical education at the University. An author, speaker, psychotherapist and renowned medical educator, Dr. Stuart began her studies at Kean and earned her bachelor's degree in psychology, reflecting her longstanding, deep interest in that field. She went on to receive her master's degree and doctorate in social psychology at Rutgers University, working as a clinician at the Mental Health Center, and qualifying for a license as a practicing psychologist.
Dr. Stuart, Professor Emeritus of Family Medicine and Community Health at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, credits her time at Kean with giving her a solid foundation for a successful career as a medical educator. In her 30-year career at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Dr. Stuart headed the Behavioral Health Program for the Department of Family Medicine. She carved out a unique role as a psychologist working alongside medical doctors, teaching the art of effectively integrating mental and physical health practices. She was elected as an Honorary Member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, an extraordinary achievement for a psychologist.
The successful applicant will be an influential voice in the field of medical education, with a compelling record of research, teaching and service. We are seeking a thought leader with an established and sustained record of research productivity; a strong desire to mentor graduate student research; the ability to secure extramural funding in support of an active research agenda; and an interest and capacity to teach within the Physician Assistant Studies Program.
Qualifications: A doctoral degree (Ph.D., MD or the equivalent) in the medical sciences or a closely related field and a distinguished record of research, teaching and service in higher education is required. Preferred qualifications include: expertise in medicine, public health, anatomy, epidemiology, biostatistics, health data science, bioethics or related disciplines associated with the education of future physician assistants; prior experience teaching or mentoring physician assistant students or others aspiring to careers as medical professionals; clinical training in healthcare that embraces a patient-centered approach; and proven success in securing competitive grants in support of research initiatives.
