Job Summary

The Pulmonary Student Intern assists licensed Respiratory Therapists by providing the most basic respiratory therapy treatments and procedures. Performs patient/family care as well as documentation at the most basic performance level under the direct, immediate, and on premise supervision of a licensed Respiratory Therapist. Performs airway clearance, administers aerosolized medication, assists with cleaning of equipment and restocking of respiratory supplies and, assists with oxygen therapy administration.

Job Specific Duties


  • Assesses patients in terms of clinical condition (heart rate, respiratory rate, etc.) and documents findings (Pre/Post therapy) in an accurate and timely manner.

  • Performs and teaches aerosolized medication therapies via small volume nebulizer and metered dose inhaler (MDI).

  • Initiates and maintains oxygen therapy systems.

  • Performs and teaches airway clearance modalities for the purpose of assisting the patient in the mobilization of bronchial secretions.

  • Follows all Infection Control standards and ensures proper use of Personal Protective Equipment per hospital policy and procedures to ensure safe patient care.

  • Assists with cleaning of equipment and restocking of respiratory supplies.

  • Performs other assigned tasks to promote efficient practice operation and contribute to the provision of quality patient care.

Minimum Job Requirements


  • Currently Enrolled in a CoARC accredited Respiratory Therapy program, and completed at least one clinical rotation

  • American Heart Association BLS – maintain active and in good standing

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • Healthcare related field experience preferred.

  • Able to work effectively in a collaborative environment and follow the direction of the Registered Respiratory Therapist and/or Respiratory Supervisor.

  • Able to float to assigned unit/department and be flexible.

  • Ability to apply principles of evidenced-based practice, analytical thinking, and service excellence in practice.

  • Strong problem solving, critical thinking, and conflict resolution skills.

  • Ability to problem solve and adapt standard clinical procedures to patients needs associated with pediatric and neonatal population.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.

  • Must be computer literate.
