Your impact:

The Senior Director, Editorial Operations will work alongside the Editor-in-Chief to Manage edit team performance; responsible for all staffing, recruiting, hiring, work process, and organization. They will partner with the business manager to track weekly actuals vs budget and department costs, manage spending, and advise the editor-in-chief on the implementation of cost-saving strategies. They will directly manage the managing editor and editorial business manager, working with them to establish schedules and meet copy deadlines. They will also partner with the marketing and advertising teams, as well as other departments at Hearst including corporate, legal, research, HR, benefits, and payroll.

What you’ll do: 


  • Manage edit team performance, responsible for all staffing, recruiting, hiring and work process, organization 

  • Identify and deliver cost savings in MIC and departmental expenses 

  • Find efficiencies and implement new procedures in all editorial areas 

  • Partner with the business manager to track weekly actuals vs budget and department costs and actively manage spending as needed 

  • Approve invoices and timesheets 

  • Attend wall meetings and liaison with the advertising department to help achieve favorable ad/edit placement 

  • Advise editor-in-chief on implementation of cost-saving strategies, for example, pickup art vs shooting, restructuring departments for salary savings etc. 

  • Work with the managing editor to establish schedules, meet copy deadlines 

  • Directly manage the managing editor and editorial business manager 

  • Liaison with Hearst International and its multiple titles 

  • Lead ongoing negotiations regarding rights, embargo options, etc. 

  • Lead interactions with all other departments at Hearst—corporate, consumer marketing, legal, research, HR, benefits, payroll, etc. 

  • Work with legal and contracts department and outside parties to negotiate all contracts on behalf of the edit team 

  • Lead participation in beta tests for new platforms and processes 

  • Manage office space, seating chart, etc. 

Who you are:


  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, Communications, or related field

  • 7+ years of editorial experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership or management role in content publishing.

  • Strong editorial judgment, with a keen eye for detail and a deep understanding of journalistic ethics and storytelling.

  • Proven ability to manage and mentor editorial teams, fostering a collaborative and results-oriented culture.

  • Expertise in content production, editorial workflows, and magazine production processes.

  • Experience with budgeting, resource management, and project management in a publishing environment.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments and lead teams effectively.

  • Proficiency with content management systems (CMS), editorial tools, and digital publishing platforms.

  • Passion for the magazine’s focus and commitment to producing high-quality, engaging content.

The base salary for this role is between $149,000 and $160,000. The actual base pay offered is dependent upon many factors, such as: transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
