Job Description:

POSITION PURPOSE

The Design Automation Engineer will collaborate with subject matter experts to document standardized approaches to technical problems, create relevant automation tools, and support associated training for the applicable design & engineering personnel in support of product engineering initiatives at BAC. This role will focus on delivering global consistency, improved quality, and higher efficiency to product engineering efforts in a wide range of design, engineering, and associated business support functions related to new product introduction and product support. The Design Automation Engineer will also be engaged in identifying opportunities for these initiatives, including supporting the evaluation of their costs, benefits, timelines, and resource requirements.

Examples of areas for automation include but are not limited to: product data generation & management, design process automation, template development, bill of material creation & maintenance processes, and MRP system integration. Expertise in all these areas is not required, but the Design Automation Engineer will need to be capable of learning them sufficiently to deliver the required tools & documentation in each area.

Daily activities will be primarily independent, and regular work with subject matter experts to develop documentation to be used as the basis for automated processes will be essential for success. Therefore, strong communication, documentation, and organizational skills will be required, as will the ability to train product engineering personnel in new tool use. This position will feature interaction with subject matter experts throughout the global engineering department, as well as other personnel in regional engineering, manufacturing, and business systems departments, including communication with a globally diverse audience.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

It is expected that the Design Automation Engineer will execute projects and provide technical support through the activities listed below:


  • Work as a professional with regular guidance and direction from others.

  • Serve as a team member on Global Product Engineering Center of Excellence initiatives.

  • Prepare and present training to all levels of the organization.

  • Support designers and engineers in the organization in areas of expertise.

  • Identify opportunities for product engineering process improvements to meet business needs, customer requirements, and quality/productivity/cost targets.

  • Develop, maintain, and train personnel on process documentation and associated tools.

  • Implement "best practice" rules for product engineering documentation and activities to promote standardization across functions.

  • Identify and implement improvements to engineering processes to increase productivity and quality of deliverables.

  • Implement industry accepted best practices in all relevant work.

  • Travel periodically to technical conferences, trade organization meetings, and BAC facilities.

  • Work with product engineering teams to develop, pilot, and improve processes, documentation, and tools.

NATURE & SCOPE

The Design Automation Engineer reports directly to the Chief Engineer, Global Product Engineering Center of Excellence. As part of the Platform Engineering Team, the Design Automation Engineer will have a high level of interaction with New Product Introduction teams, and other product engineering groups. Interaction with Global Engineering core technology and support service groups, global advanced manufacturing, and business systems will also be required.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

Required Knowledge/Skills:


  • An associate degree with 4 years' experience or a bachelor's degree with 2 years' experience in an Engineering or Computer Science discipline is required.

  • 2+ years Autodesk Inventor production design experience required. Sheet metal design experience strongly preferred.

  • 2+ years Autodesk Vault experience required.

  • Experience programming in object-oriented programming language required. Inventor iLogic experience strongly preferred, VBA/VB.NET a plus.

  • Proven record in creating design tools / templates / processes and associated documentation required.

  • Experience training designers preferred.

  • Experience managing a code base a plus.

  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of products, especially Excel, is required.

  • SharePoint site administration experience a plus.

  • Workflow management software such as Power Automate or Nintex a plus.

  • Proven record in effective written and oral communication.

This position requires occasional lifting up to 30 pounds and travel both domestically and internationally up to 25% of the time.

BAC Hiring Compensation Range $59,500 - $102,000.
