The Vice Dean for Research plays a crucial role within the Dean's leadership team, partnering closely with the Dean to shape and implement the College of Medicine's research strategy. This position is responsible for fostering a dynamic research environment by providing essential resources and opportunities for researchers and scholars. The Vice Dean will lead efforts to recruit, develop, and retain top-tier scientists, clinician-scientists, and research staff, thereby enhancing the college's strengths in targeted scientific disciplines.
In addition to talent development, the Vice Dean will oversee the management of the research infrastructure necessary to support a diverse and expanding scientific portfolio. This includes responsibilities for grants management, compliance, research facilities, and financial oversight. The Vice Dean will also collaborate with stakeholders to establish strategic partnerships and cultivate a culture of innovation that promotes commercialization and technology transfer. Ultimately, this role aims to elevate the research enterprise of the College of Medicine by increasing funding and advancing discovery and scholarship.

Key Responsibilities:
Enhance research funding productivity and outcomes, evidenced by increased publications, funded research, clinical trials, and technology transfer, while spearheading the growth of the institution's research enterprise.
In partnership with the Dean, define the structure of the Office of Research (including Associate Deans roles), provide oversight, leadership development, and foster collaboration within the College of Medicine Office of Research to ensure alignment with institutional research goals and strategies.
Lead the development and implementation of policies, practices, support systems, and incentive programs to optimize research operations and increase external research funding.
Build and strengthen independent, collaborative, and multidisciplinary research programs internally and outside of the College of Medicine.
Provide strategic partnership and leadership in matters relating to research, scholarship, grant-seeking, and technology translation and transfer.
Advise on strategic direction of the research enterprise and support infrastructure.
Ensure fiscal responsibility, including the creation and adherence to a balanced annual budget.
Create and implement structures and initiatives to facilitate the commercialization of research discoveries, including supporting intellectual property development, technology transfer, and fostering partnerships with industry to translate innovations into marketable solutions.
Create a focused effort dedicated to philanthropy with a commitment to direct these resources toward the COM and OSUWMC strategic plans and to research initiatives that support these plans.
Mentor faculty on research career issues.
Required Qualifications:
An earned doctorate or the equivalent and an outstanding research record commensurate with the qualifications of a tenured professor in the OSU College of Medicine.
Demonstrated experience in managing and expanding large-scale research programs; examples include centers, departments, and complex research grants.
Leadership experience in interdisciplinary settings, with a proven ability to collaborate across diverse academic and research disciplines.
Exceptional leadership skills, with the ability to collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders, inspire and motivate others, successfully lead others through change, and act as a consensus builder.
Proven experience leading efforts to recruit, develop, and retain top-tier scientists fostering a vibrant research community that supports career growth, collaboration, and long-term institutional success.
Track record of leading an extramurally funded research program.
Strong ability to develop and implement strategic plans that address long-term opportunities and advance the institution's research mission.
Experience in working with federal and state level funding agencies.
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience with oversight of large complex grants.
Strong record of research mentoring.
Experience leading efforts to recruit, develop, and retain and clinician-scientists.
Experience working with development teams and engaging with donors to secure funding and support for research initiatives.
