The Plumber plays a critical role in supporting the University Housing Facilities Management team by performing a wide range of plumbing tasks. This position is responsible for ensuring the continued safety, comfort, and operational efficiency of the university's housing facilities, ensuring a positive environment for students, staff, faculty, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Plumbing Maintenance and Repairs:
    • Repairs, Replaces, and Installs Plumbing Fixtures: Perform routine and emergency maintenance on plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, faucets, showerheads, and other related fixtures.
    • Pipe and Fitting Work: Service plumbing systems by replacing or repairing piping, fittings, and valves. Ensure the proper functioning of water supply and drainage systems.
    • Material Recommendations: Assess plumbing systems and recommend materials for procurement based on repair or replacement needs.
    • Clogged Sewer Lines: Open and clear blocked sewage lines, using sewer machines and other appropriate equipment to restore proper flow.
    • High-Temperature and Chilled Water Lines: Perform repairs and replacements of high-temperature and chilled water lines to maintain HVAC system efficiency.
  2. HVAC and Refrigeration System Maintenance:
    • Repairs and Replacements: Service and repair heating and refrigeration units such as furnaces, air conditioners, water heaters, refrigerators, and HVAC systems.
    • Installation and Servicing of Gas Appliances: Install, repair, and maintain gas-powered appliances, ensuring compliance with safety standards.
    • BAS (Building Automation System) Integration: Work with BAS controls to monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize HVAC system performance across university housing facilities.
  3. Equipment Handling:
    • Uncrating and Moving Equipment: Uncrate, transport, and position plumbing equipment, refrigeration units, and gas appliances as needed for installations, repairs, or replacements.
    • Organization of Workspaces: Maintain organized, clean, and safe workspaces, including the service truck, tools, and equipment. Ensure proper storage and handling of all materials and supplies.
  4. Renovation and Construction Support:
    • Plumbing for Renovations: Assist with plumbing installation and service tasks related to renovation and new construction projects within university housing areas.
    • Work Orders and Project Support: Perform plumbing tasks in alignment with scheduled preventative maintenance (PM) activities, work orders, and special projects.
  5. General Responsibilities:
    • Supply Management: Maintain an inventory of tools and supplies, preparing lists of required materials and services to ensure that all plumbing and HVAC systems are well-maintained.
    • Damage Reporting: Identify and report any damage to university equipment and property, especially related to plumbing systems, and take immediate corrective actions where necessary.
    • Occasional Overtime: This position requires flexibility to work occasional overtime, as necessary, to meet urgent maintenance needs or project deadlines.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Successful completion of a recognized plumber apprenticeship program or five (5) years (60 months) of full-time journey- level plumber experience.
  3. Possession of current State of Illinois Plumber's License.
  4. As required by position to be filled, current license/certification consistent with vehicles, machinery and equipment that is routinely used in the general occupational area.ii Dependent upon institutional need, incumbents may be required to obtain job-related certification or license, such as a valid Illinois Department of Public Health Lead Abatement Worker License. Consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act, accommodations may be afforded to applicants/employees.

The selected candidate will be required to complete universal refrigeration license/certification and CCCDI license within probationary period, if not already complete.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Possess all skills normally required of a journeyman plumber. Knowledge of all tools work procedures, building construction and maintenance associated with the plumbing trades, ability to read blueprints and building specifications. Must have an understanding of BAS.
  • Universal refrigeration license/certification with experience in the field of A/C and Heating Maintenance, including small residential units and large chiller equipment.
  • Cross Connection Control Device Inspector (CCCDI) license
  • Must demonstrate ability to work with diverse groups of people
