Summary: Instructs aqua fitness classes at the City's aquatic facilities. Classes vary from pre/post-natal water fitness, arthritis, generalized water fitness and deep-water fitness.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The following duties and responsibilities and illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.
Instruction of safe, enjoyable aqua fitness classes.
Assist in the maintenance and care of program equipment, facilities, and environment.
Attend and participate in all required City sponsored trainings and meetings.
Knowledge and enforcement of aquatic policies and operating procedures.
Maintaining a level of physical fitness appropriate to the demands of the instructors' position.
Knowledge and ability to assist with emergency procedures regarding First Aid/CPR/AED, whistle blows, and accident and incident reports.
Maintaining a current certification of an accredited national fitness or water fitness certification.
Maintaining a current certification of First Aid/CPR/AED or obtain within 90 days of hire.
Understanding of wellness principles, basic physiology, and safe exercise techniques, and the ability to communicate this information clearly to the participants.
Maintenance of documents including attendance forms and consent forms.
Communication with supervisors regarding concerns, comments, requests, complaints as necessary.
Performance of related work as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This position is not responsible for the supervision of employees.

The Aquatics Department has a dynamic and changing schedule. Ability to work varying shifts is desirable, particularly weekends and holiday shift availability.
Education and Experience: Must maintain a current certification of an accredited national fitness or water fitness certification and be able to demonstrate these skills during employment. In addition hold a First Aid/CPR/AED certification or obtain within 90 days of hire.
Language Skills: Ability to read instructions and communicate with City supervisor and the general public. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisor, user groups, customers, and the general public.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve and implement practical solutions to problems. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Foresee and initiate proactive measures to insure program quality, customer service and safety.
Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations: Current American Red Cross CPR and First Aid Certifications required
Physical activity required in leading/demonstrating classes
Lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds
Hand-eye coordination for operation of a computer keyboard
Ability to read written materials and to observe programs
Speech and hearing capabilities to maintain communications with employees and citizens
Aqua Fitness Instructor Performance Steps
Step 1
Performs as required by job description with direct supervision
Serves as an Aquatics Fitness Instructor with punctual attendance for all scheduled shifts without incident
Attends all scheduled aqua fitness instructor trainings unless excused
Independently sets up and tears down class equipment in a timely manner
Accumulates a minimum of 250 hours
Obtains Aqua Fitness Instructor Certification
Favorable review by the Aquatics Coordinator
Step 2
Performs all of the duties outlined in Step 1
Initiative and ability to do work beyond what is expected
Willingness to work extra hours and help with special events and holidays
Accumulates a minimum of 480 hours as Aqua Fitness Instructor
Favorable review by the Aquatics Coordinator
Step 3
Performs all of the duties outlined in Step 1 & 2
Assist Aquatics Coordinator with scheduling of classes and instructor assignments
Thorough knowledge of Aqua Fitness instruction techniques with the ability to demonstrate skills to others.
Accumulates a minimum of 750 hours as Aqua Fitness Instructor
Favorable review by the Aquatics Coordinator
Step 4
Coordinates responsibilities and takes direction from the Aquatics Coordinators.
Assist coordinators in developing work schedules and training new employees.
Assists in the assessment, training, and evaluation of aqua fitness instructor performance requirements.
Develop new ideas for aqua fitness classes.
Accumulates a minimum of 1040 hours as Aqua Fitness Instructor
Favorable review and interview by the Aquatics Coordinators and Aquatics Supervisor
Step 5
Performs all of the duties outlined in Step 4.
Conducts regularly scheduled Aqua Fitness Instructor Trainings.
Deals with public complaints, researches problem areas and offers suggestions for improvements.
Exhibits a high standard of public relations through speaking with patron on the various programs offered in aquatics
Accumulates a minimum of 1500
Favorable review by the Aquatics Coordinator
Step 6
Performs all of the duties outlined in Step 4&5.
Accumulates a minimum of 2080 hours as Aqua Fitness Instructor
Favorable review by the Aquatics Coordinator
All steps based on budget availability and current City of Fort Collins Policy
Based on previous employee experience steps can be skipped with the approval of Area Manager
