GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Learning Specialist's primary responsibility in the Camner Center for Academic Resources is to support students' academics goals by providing guidance and instruction related to time management, organization, notetaking, test taking, and other academic strategies. As part of the Independent Learning Initiative program, learning specialists are assigned between 15-18 students to meet with one on one on a weekly basis to develop individualized academic plans and implement study skills strategies for maximizing performance in the classroom. The learning specialists also work with faculty to develop and facilitate specialized workshops to meet the needs of students, including those with disabilities. This position reports directly to the Assistant Director of the Independent Learning Initiative.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintain case load of undergraduate students in the Independent Learning Initiative (ILI) program.
Meet with assigned students weekly and maintain case notes for each student.
Facilitate communication with faculty, staff, and administrators related to individual student support.
Monitor academic progress.
Coach students on self-advocacy skills.
Provide support services related to time management, organization, notetaking, test taking, and other academic services.
Create and provide individualized supplemental materials to assist students in achieving their academic goals.
Updates student performance reports and identifies trends to contribute to the assessment of the ILI program.
Meet with students requesting academic support for a one-time appointment focused on specific learning strategies, organizational techniques, and materials.
Design and present engaging workshops for students on topics related to college learning strategies; both independently and in collaboration with a particular school/college or instructor.
Research and identify best practices in assisting students with academic support including learning strategies and working with students with individual challenges including those with disabilities.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist in the promotion of the ILI program, workshops, and related services of the Camner Center.
Provide specified training for peer tutors and graduate students working in the Camner Center.
Conduct collaborative meetings with students seeking accommodations through the Office of Disability Services.
Staffing events on select evening and weekend programs including open houses for perspective students, orientation, and other resource fairs.
Departmental duties include attending all staff meetings, participate in orientation programs, serve on related to committees, and assist with special projects.
Other duties as assigned by the Associate Director and Director of the Camner Center for Academic Resources.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum bachelor's degree in education or related field required.
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Two years of experience in teaching or in the field of education.
Experience in higher education preferred.
Equivalent type combinations of education and experience may be considered.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES (KSA):
Broad knowledge of instructional and learning strategies.
General knowledge of high incidence disabilities.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Proficiency in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Acrobat Reader, and other related software.
Engagement of and follow-up with constituencies.
Demonstrated customer service skills.
