The Hussman Institute has an exciting opportunity for a Post Doctoral Associate position. The incumbent performs scientific research and studies under the supervision of managing staff. Moreover, the Post Doctoral Associate promotes institutional recognition through literal contributions to the scientific community.




CORE JOB FUNCTIONS




  • Conducts research on CMT and related disorders as assigned by mentor and supervisor Dr. Stephan Zuchner Prepares research reports and technical papers for publishing.




  • Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and theories.




  • Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories in genetics, genomics.




  • Develops advanced analytical models and systems for long read sequencing, gene identification, expression studies and more.




  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Department Specific Functions


The Postdoctoral Associate will work in the laboratory on the molecular genetic aspects of axonopathies, especially CMT and related disorders, with the goal to identify causes of disease and understand mechanistic molecular function.


Accountabilities (For Non-exempt Employees Include Percent of Effort):


The Postdoctoral Associate will conduct research on peripheral and central neuropathies.



-Molecular biology techniques to include, but are not limited to PCR, cloning, and tissue culture. In addition isolation and manipulation of RNA including RNA extraction, RT-PCR, and quantitative real-time PCR are performed routinely.



-Perform basic analyses of next-generation sequencing data including quality control filtering and bioinformatic interpretation. Associate will learn UNIX programming during her training.



-Collect information and data through observation, experimentation and various other methods, to include operating highly technical laboratory instruments and equipment.



-Analyze sequencing data from large sample sets.



-Confer with principal investigator to review work assignments and develop plans for research experiments; make minor modifications to existing laboratory procedures and techniques to meet the needs of the particular equipment as required.



-Review journals, abstracts and scientific literature to keep abreast of new developments and to obtain information regarding previous experiments to aid in the design and development of original procedures and techniques.



-Supervise, train and instruct residents, interns, students or lower level personnel in laboratory techniques and procedures.



- Potentially work with rodent model systems



- Present research findings at lab meetings and conferences.
