The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (http://www.usf.edu/engineering/cee/) has twenty-five (25) tenure-track/tenured faculty members, two (2) instructors, five (5) supporting faculty from the Center for Urban Transportation (CUTR) at USF, three (3) staff members, and offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees, serving nearly 250 undergraduates, 125 masters, and 70 PhD students. The Civil Engineering graduate program is ranked in the top 70 nationally and top 50 among US public universities, by US News and World Report.

Established in 1964 and currently led by Interim Dean Sanjukta Bhanja, the College of Engineering at the University of South Florida is ranked #56 among public institutions (#93 overall) by U.S. News & World Report's 2024-2025 engineering graduate school rankings . Position Summary:

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is seeking a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor who can develop a funded interdisciplinary research program in critical challenges in transportation infrastructure systems, particularly in areas that bridge transportation and environmental impacts. Candidates with research experience focused on transportation resilience, especially in addressing flooding risks from the compound effects of sea level rise, rainstorms, and infrastructure failures will be given preference. Interdisciplinary research that bridges transportation and environmental impacts is considered a plus for this position. The candidate must also be qualified to teach/develop courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the above interdisciplinary areas.

The candidate will be expected to develop and lead a funded research program by securing external research grants from federal agencies such as NSF, DOT, EPA, DOE, and other relevant organizations.

Collaboration with colleagues across various disciplines-including civil engineering, environmental and water resources engineering, marine science, urban planning, and data science-is essential. The candidate will also be expected to publish high-impact research in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at national and international conferences. Additional responsibilities include teaching and developing courses related to transportation systems and smart, resilient infrastructure, supervising and mentoring graduate students on theses and dissertations, and engaging in professional service activities, including participation in departmental, college, and university committees.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Candidates should have completed a PhD from an accredited institution in transportation engineering, or an interdisciplinary area of civil engineering with emphasis on transportation. The successful candidate(s) are expected to start in Fall 2025. Candidates are also expected to have demonstrated leadership and communication skills, be able to work effectively in teams, integrate research, education and service activities, and be actively engaged in leadership in professional societies. Candidates must be committed to broadening participation among students, faculty, and staff.

QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Experience):

Minimum Qualifications:

Doctoral degree from an accredited institution or the highest degree appropriate in the field of specialization with a demonstrated record of achievement in teaching, academic research, and service. Must meet university criteria for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor.

Preferred Qualifications:

A successful candidate will be expected to lead a team of graduate students in Ph.D. research and teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in civil/environmental engineering in any area of Transportation Engineering that complements the department's strengths. Preference will be given to individuals with demonstrated expertise in one of the following areas: Candidates with research experience focused on transportation resilience, especially in addressing flooding risks from the compound effects of sea level rise, rainstorms, and infrastructure failures.

The ideal candidate should possess a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related field with a concentration on transportation systems. They should demonstrate the potential to establish a robust, externally funded research program and have a strong publication record in relevant peer-reviewed journals. Additionally, the candidate must possess the ability to teach and effectively mentor students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. A commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration with environmental and water resources engineers and problem-solving in transportation and critical infrastructure systems is essential, as are excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
