Job Summary:

The Area Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Manager has direct responsibility for the facilitation of and adherence to Ballard’s HSE Program within the assigned operational area of the company. Working under the direct supervision of the Director of HSE, this position works to assure HSE requirements are appropriately identified and planned for throughout the project lifecycle, area personnel remain compliant with federal, state, client, and company requirements, and supports employee safety and development as an educator, coach, and advocate.

This role is integral to the long-term growth and success of the company and requires a driven and passionate candidate who is energized to work with a strong team.

This role could also work out of our office in Lincoln Park, MI.

Education:

  • Degree or equivalent certification in occupational health or safety preferred
  • Will accept equivalent education and experience in a safety role with a demonstrated aptitude for the listed responsibilities is also in lieu of a degree
  • OSHA 30hr-Construction required

Experience:

  • OSHA compliance is the minimum standard. The position requires considerable experience with, and knowledge of, state and federal regulations and standards, but also practical experience communicating this information to team members in a manner that drives comprehension and adherence.
  • Experience producing multiple project submittals, monitoring HSE compliance/needs for multiple project sites, tracking/organizing/reporting on multiple metrics, interacting with regulatory agencies, and educating clients.
  • Experience building and supporting a high-performing team through vision, oversight of primary job duties and goal completion, and mentorship or coaching.
  • Experience providing occupational or emergency skills training to adults is preferred

Responsibilities:

  • Assures compliance to Ballard’s HSE program within all area operations and locations (offices, shops, yards, and project sites). Has the responsibility, authority, and expectation to stop unsafe actions and/or work.
  • Builds and manages a strong team of HSE professionals to support applicable areas. Hires quality talent and sets expectations. Conducts performance reviews and provides regular feedback to hold team members accountable for meeting expectations. Supports HR programs and processes required of all managers.
  • Works closely with area management to develop a strong sense of “safety ownership” within area employees.
  • Attends and contributes to area estimating and operational planning meetings to ensure HSE needs are identified, planned for, and provided.
  • Schedules and conducts periodic project and facility inspections, documents and reports findings, and supports implementation of appropriate corrective measures with associated managers in a timely manner.
  • Performs audits to verify HSE programs are being adhered to and remain effective within the operating area.
  • Tracks leading and lagging indicators and addresses priority areas of improvement in collaboration with associated managers.
  • Facilitates qualification and training programs within the area, including scheduling or providing training or evaluations as appropriate.
  • Manages the completion of area safety pre-qualification tasks for clients within the area of assignment.
  • Under the direction of the project owners, attends client meetings and engages with clients to make recommendations on safety improvements and planning.
  • Acts as direct liaison between field crews and area/regional management for safety needs, concerns, and ideas for improvement.
  • Manages incidents from initial care or investigation through root cause and corrective action.
  • Acts as point of contact for regulatory agencies with jurisdiction over area of assignment.
  • Identifies and communicates areas of improvement to Director of HSE and takes an active role in improvement tasks as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands/Working Environment:

  • Working outdoors in various temperatures and conditions
  • Will wear various PPE (respirators, fall protection, etc.)
  • Will travel on various land, water, and aircraft
  • Will sit and stand for several hours at a time
  • Lifting, climbing, pulling, pushing, squatting for various periods of time
  • Travel is primarily local, with approximately 10% national travel.

Salary Range:

  • $95K - 120K per year
  • Pay is commensurate with experience and qualifications
