The Electrical Design Engineer is responsible for coordinating campus-wide electrical system distribution testing, and maintenance and operations, support services and projects, a variety of small and large renovation projects, as well as new construction projects.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Make recommendations for and oversees the testing and maintenance of electrical power equipment by campus personnel and contracted service providers.
Ensure installations and designs are compliant to electrical code, OSHA regulations and client's Design Guidelines for all maintenance repairs, renovation and new construction projects.
Work with a qualified electrical engineering firm to perform shock and arc flash risk assessments and short circuity fault/device coordination studies are performed, along with coordinating the installation and maintaining the accuracy of the arc flash hazard warning labels.
Ensure that plans are within functional program, budgetary, environmental, and legal requirements.
Oversee the building design process to ensure compliance with LAUSD’s standards and guidelines by working with design professionals and various District administrators to ensure that new and modernized structures meet both educational and building standards requirements.
Ensure that all steps within the project are documented and that the documentation meets legal requirements.
Participate in community relations and outreach programs to create understanding and acceptance of District building project design within the community.
Recruit, develop and manage a professional staff to support the design function for the District.
Plan, manage, and coordinate all aspects of the project schedule, scope, and cost.
Value Engineer the project by identifying opportunities for savings and ensuring material substitutions are equal.
Communicate with and manage project stakeholders.
Evaluate documents and communicate the client’s specific goals and expectations to all project team members.
Develop and communicate action plans that will lead the project team throughout the project, beginning with the initial Project Management Plan.
Re-evaluate the contract scope of work as the project progresses against the goals, expectations, and the needs of the client, and recommend adjustments as necessary.
Coordinate with cost management group as applicable for preparation of cost estimates, cost studies, actual job cost reviews, and budget reconciliation.
Organize and maintain framework for project team processes and record keeping of electronic and physical documents.
Drive the permitting process by designing team documents to be submitted to various local, state, and federal agencies and ensure the applicable permits are moving through the process efficiently.
Ensure the project design management continues to follow the client project documents such as budget, scope, schedule, and client's design standards.
Prepare cost and revenue projections.

Knowledge & Skills Required:
Bachelor’s in electrical engineering.
10+ years of experience in a similar type of role.
Electrical component maintenance and testing, design of lighting, power, data and communication systems in research and academic laboratory facilities or hospital facilities.
Electrical Professional Engineer license from the State of California
Knowledge of documentation required to meet legal requirements.
Knowledge of: Short-circuit voltage drop calculations, Electrical and control components, instruments, sensors, switches and equipment selection, Electro-mechanical controls and interlocks.
Knowledge of electro-mechanical (i.e., motors, generators, etc.) equipment technology and applications, 120V single phase and 480V 3-phase circuits, programmable logic control equipment, operations and programming, electrical protective devices, low, medium and high voltage switchgear equipment, technology, maintenance and servicing, motor control centers and 4160 equipment.
