Sol design + consulting is looking for an experienced HERS Rater/QAD with both extensive field experience and thorough industry competency in a role that focuses mainly on Energy Star Multifamily New Construction (ESMFNC) certification. The starting title at Sol would be "Rater/Project-in-Charge" (aka "Rater PIC"), leading to Energy Star program management.
The Rater PIC will work under direct supervision of our Director of Energy and serve as a liaison between our Project Managers/Coordinators and our Testing & Verification Inspectors.
As part of our green building certification services, the candidate must execute the following tasks:
- review, understand, evaluate and communicate findings from drawings, specifications, and program requirements
- provide remote technical support to our testing and verification team,
- communicate results and directives clearly to clients and Sol's project management staff with written reports
- collect and organize comprehensive documentation and submission for Energy Star certification
- provide on-site inspections, testing, and diagnostics when needed

Responsibilities
Perform on-site building performance testing and inspections in accordance with Sol & RESNET standards
Conduct energy efficiency tests (air infiltration, HVAC duct tightness, ventilation airflow rates, combustion efficiency and safety, building pressures, etc.)
Perform field verification of energy/green building features utilizing office-provided procedures, checklist and tools
Create and review Ekotrope or REM/Rate energy models for residential projects
Conduct thorough review of plans-&-specs, energy models, and field verifications for Energy Star (multifamily and single-family) program.
Read construction drawings and specifications to verify/coordinate energy/green building features
Travel 1-2 days per week within 100 mile radius of Cincinnati/Cleveland offices; or longer distances, if working remotely, with overnight travel about 1-2 nights per week
Ensure appropriate materials and equipment are brought to job site to adequately complete home performance testing
Evaluate own work for errors, omissions, and workmanship problems
Clean and maintain company-issued equipment daily
Maintain record of material and time used on each job, and report bi-weekly
Follow all safety rules set forth by company and governmental regulatory agencies and ensure that hazardous conditions are reported and corrected
Other duties as assigned to meet Testing & Verification needs of the office
Qualifications
HERS Rater certification as a minimum. Energy Star Single Family and Energy Star Multifamily New Construction Certifications are highly desired. HERS QAD is a big plus.
Degree in Building Science, Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering, or equivalent experience in construction trade, such as HVAC, electrical, insulation, or commissioning
2-5 years or more of experience in construction or energy rating is preferred.
Knowledge of HVAC systems is preferred.
Knowledge of framing, insulation installation is preferred.
Aptitude for interpreting architectural drawings and construction specifications
Meticulous attention to completeness of inspections, recording, and documenting all findings via clear photos and reports
Ability to effectively communicate technical and program concepts in written and verbal form to builders
Computer software fluency - Microsoft Excel & Word; energy modeling software (i.e. REMRate, Ekotrope), navigate online project workflow tool; use smart-phone app for field verification
Excellent organization and time management skills
Basic math skills, including geometry
Must have good analytical skills and problem-solving abilities
Ability to: lift in excess of 75 lbs.; climb ladders; follow safety awareness and protocols
Ability to work in small spaces (i.e. attics, crawl spaces)
Must possess valid driver's license, good driving record and provide proof of current automobile insurance
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
