Description: Position Description

Reporting to the Dean for the Arts & Humanities Division of FAS, this role serves as a key member of the Dean's Senior Staff, providing strategic direction, leadership, and guidance for both undergraduate and graduate education for the Arts & Humanities.

Job Specific Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning. In consultation with the Divisional Dean and A&H faculty, responsible for setting the strategic direction and leadership to undergraduate and graduate education for the Arts & Humanities, spearheading initiatives consistent with strategic planning outcomes.

Supervision. Indirectly supervises and coordinates the assistant directors of education across the division, including but not limited to positions in Philosophy, Religion, and Theater, Dance and Media and Ethnic, Migration, Rights.

Undergraduate Curricular Innovation. Drive and direct initiatives and innovations in the undergraduate curriculum, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations within the Arts & Humanities, and between disciplines housed across the FAS, and other schools at Harvard.

Direct the creation and implementation a set of core humanities courses, from developing the concept to finished curriculum, ensuring course are innovative, engaging, and aligned with academic standards. Develop and implement assessment strategies.

Teaching. Teach two courses per year, to be determined in consultation with the Dean.

Faculty Advising. In consultation with OUE, Registrar, the Bok Center and Faculty Affairs, provide strategic guidance and support to A&H faculty members, ensuring alignment with educational goals and institutional policies, while fostering professional development and enhancing overall teaching effectiveness. Facilitate communication between faculty, the division, and the college addressing academic concerns, and assisting in the planning and implementation of curriculum and instructional initiatives. Develop and implement training for staff, faculty, TAs/TFs, and other academics.

Direct the evaluation, development, and implementation of administrative systems and processes to enhance course effectiveness and maximize faculty and student engagement to support humanistic learning.

Direct comprehensive reporting and analysis related to operations, performance measurement, and continuous improvement of initiatives, ensuring that data-driven decisions inform strategic planning and enhance educational outcomes.

Act as a representative at the department and school level; represent university to external constituencies, including but not limited to the Mignone Center for Career Success, donors, alumni, and student employers.

Ensure compliance with University policies and procedures and applicable legal rules and regulations.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 10 years' relevant work experience
  • Supervisory experience


Additional Qualifications and Skills

PhD degree or equivalent work experience required, as this position requires a concurrent appointment as a lecturer in one of the A&H departments. The incumbent will teach in a foundational humanities course. Minimum of 12 years experience with student advising, teaching, and participation in strategic planning, supervisory experience.

Extensive experience in undergraduate humanities teaching; experience working with faculty and leading faculty committees.
