The Department of Ophthalmology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for a Research Associate position in the Academic Support Staff. This appointment will be initially for one (1) year and continuation during that time period and renewal are based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding (limited to three (3) years). Expertise is required in the specific area of demonstrated skills in performing mechanistic studies in models of eye disease are preferred. Foundational knowledge of iPSCs and retinal cells, including hands-on experience with primary human cells. Familiarity with high-throughput pooled screening techniques. Ability to draw conclusions from analyzed ATAC-seq, Hi-C, and RNA sequencing data. Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree.
Responsibilities may include culturing and differentiation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and mammalian cell lines. Using a variety of molecular engineering approaches to screen for functional biology. In vitro and ex vivo assay development, and molecular and cell biology skills, including mammalian cell culture, DNA/RNA extraction, qPCR, Western blotting, and flow cytometry required. Experience with genetic engineering techniques, including viral transduction and CRISPR/Cas editing. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Collaborating with internal and external colleagues to successfully meet project goals.
The successful applicant will have an opportunity to plan and perform studies with various preclinical assays to evaluate therapeutic agents, pro-actively investigating, improving, or adapting existing methods and techniques.
Perform literature review to assess competitive landscape in related fields in order to identify new areas of research consistent with strategic direction. Work collaboratively in a matrix environment and frequently interact with senior internal and external colleagues, often requiring coordination across multiple functions and groups. Present data, results, and ideas, both verbally and in writing to diverse audiences including scientific colleagues and at conferences. Draft and publish peer-reviewed manuscripts. Work under limited supervision with a high level of autonomy. Supervise more junior-level scientists and students.
