The Assistant Controller will support the Controller in the direction of the accounting function of United Wheels, Inc. Timeliness and accuracy of all financial/management reporting and extensive accounting competency are required. The Assistant Controller will provide functional, technical and process leadership and support the Controller in performing financial activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Supervises Senior Accountants in the US
Assist the Controller in coordinating month-end and year-end reporting, prepares accruals and schedules, and submits monthly and ad hoc financial reporting packages including account analysis and reconciliations.
Drives the accounting department to the successful completion of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) each year.
Assist the Controller in the creation and implementation of accounting policies and procedures.
Assist in the formulation and implementation of best accounting practices for general ledger, Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable, and Company assets.
Oversees the process and data flow between accounting systems and sub-systems.
Consults on the effectiveness and efficiency of accounting process flow.
Develops innovative and effective solutions to problems in financial analysis, reporting and forecasting through individual effort or as part of a team.
Assists in special projects as necessary.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Manages subordinates in the accounting department. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these individuals. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting required. Minimum of 10 years progressively responsible Accounting and Financial management experience required. International accounting exposure a plus. Prior supervisory experience of two to three years is required. Microsoft office, JD Edwards or similar ERP experience required. Experience with automated information systems exposure required. Consumer products or distribution industry experience preferred.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
