At Avenues, physical education and health education are one, and our N-12 Wellness and Movement (WAM) program reflects a commitment to holistic physical, mental, and social well-being. The Avenues WAM program aims to develop physical literacy, and build healthy habits, by providing exposure to cooperative games, traditional and alternative sports, fitness training, studio-based activities, and dance. We dive deeply into wellness topics like mindfulness, emotional intelligence, healthy choices, and relationship skills. We aim to create an environment that helps students build confidence and competence, allowing them to discover their interests and pursue excellence. Our goal is for students to develop habits and skills to generate the intrinsic motivation necessary for the pursuit of lifelong health.
In this role you will:
Lead project-based wellness and movement classes and fitness electives for students grades 9-12
Collaborate intensively with colleagues to develop innovative curricula and continually deepen student learning
Ensure that students achieve key learning outcomes, targeting instruction thoughtfully to address individual needs
Build a robust learning atmosphere that leads students to feel part of a rigorous but joyful learning community
Inspire trust and confidence among parents and families
What You'll Bring
Teachers in this department bring all or most of the following:
Experience teaching physical education and health (3+ years)
Strong knowledge base in exercise science and human physiology
Interest in teaching mindfulness, nutrition, and sexual heath
Ability to teach in a variety of settings, including a gym, fitness studio and classroom
Strong speaking, listening and demonstrative skills in large group settings
A remarkable entrepreneurial drive, creativity and ability to bring new ideas to fruition
Intellectual curiosity and humility to continually grow in teaching practices
A strong sense of personal responsibility for the success of every student
Ability to solve problems quickly and remain calm under pressure
Bachelor's degree in related field
More Information
This role is for a temporary full time leave replacement estimated to take place between December 2 2024 to Feb 21, 2025. This role is compensated on a salary basis prorated for the duration of the assignment.
If hired for this position, the annual compensation range is $72,000- $110,000 depending on skills and experience. Leave positions for a duration of less than 3 months are not benefits eligible.
