Job Title - Director of Development and Communications
Location - Charlotte, NC
Position Type - Full time in-person (with flexibility), requires work on evenings and weekends
Compensation - $70,000-$83,000, depending on experience and rubric scoring
Benefits (after 90-day probationary period, with exception of healthcare benefits)

The Director of Development and Communications will work collaboratively with GenOne's Executive Director, Board of Directors, and team members to lead and implement comprehensive strategies in fundraising, marketing, and communications. This role will involve advancing development goals, effective relationship-building, and being an engaging storyteller to advance opportunities for first generation students blazing their trails through higher education.
This role emphasizes revenue generation, stakeholder engagement, and brand building to increase GenOne's impact. Opportunities for leadership development and significant nonprofit contribution await the right candidate.
The ideal candidate has highly effective verbal and written communication skills, is a strong relationship builder, and can manage multiple ongoing projects at once.
Major Roles and Responsibilities
Development Strategy & Implementation (40% of time)
Creation and execution of an annual comprehensive development strategy to meet program growth and impact goals
Co-lead GenOne's Fundraising Committee with the Executive Director and committee chair, catalyzing board involvement in fundraising
Co-lead and manage individual and institutional giving programs, emphasizing cultivation, relationships, partnerships, and invitations for investment.
Manage a portfolio of supporters
Research new grant and foundation opportunities, communicated with clear and compelling proposals (written and/or verbal)
Marketing, Communications & Storytelling (30% of time)
Co-lead GenOne's communications strategy to strengthen internal and external messaging
Put together consistent, compassionate, and asset-based storytelling for the organization in order to drive impact communications and generate income
Co-lead and develop GenOne's annual report process
Create, edit, and manage content for newsletters, social media, and 1:1 communications, enhancing GenOne's brand presence and engagement
Oversee social media platforms to improve GenOne's visibility, brand recognition, and engagement with community stakeholders.
Development Operations (20% of time)
Lead documentation for all income and ensure accuracy in GenOne's Bloomerang database
Segment donor data, engagement trends, and relationships, providing support to the Executive Director on high-value meetings and strategy
Oversee external fundraising portals, tracking all donations and addressing donor inquiries.
Other Details (10% of time)
Work outside normal office hours when required to include early mornings, evenings and weekends
Other duties as assigned to achieve the mission of GenOne
Qualifications and Skills

Highly effective written and verbal communications: Able to develop clear, mission-driven communication strategies across audiences. Produces compelling written materials and effectively presents to diverse stakeholders.
Project management: Skilled at managing multiple projects with competing demands, ensuring deadlines and quality.
Data-driven decision making: Experience with donor databases (Bloomerang preferred) and detail-oriented data management to inform fundraising strategies.
Entrepreneurial spirit & resourcefulness: Proactively overcomes challenges and leverages resources to solve problems, offering solutions and anticipating needs.
Additional Requirements:
Education: Bachelor's degree required
Experience requirements and preferences
Minimum of three years in nonprofit development, fundraising, or communications required.
Previous experience in college access or higher education, with a focus on underserved populations preferred
Previous experience with Bloomerang database preferred
Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for local travel. On occasion, staff members are needed to drive Scholars home from Club functions.
Familiarity with Google Suite or Microsoft Office products.
A passion for promoting higher education as a tool for economic mobility
Working knowledge of Google docs, sheets, and slides or equivalent Microsoft products
