Job Description:

This is an excellent position to learn preliminary and construction surveying principals using traditional and GPS survey equipment.

Pay rate of $19.502 per hour. Employees may be promoted to a Construction Technician II position at a rate of $22.434 per hour upon acquiring the necessary certifications and demonstration of skills.

Job Duties:


Surveying work includes:
• Perform or assist in preliminary surveys or Right of Way surveys
• Assist in working on a survey crew to utilize construction plans, staking data, and cross section data to stake out locations at highway construction sites.
• Document daily activities in a field book for both preliminary and construction related work, and plot cross-sections and reduce survey notes.
• Use various tools to clear for line of sight for a prelim or a construction job.
• Operate GPS equipment, total stations, levels, robotic total stations, and digital levels.
• Measurement of elevations using survey leveling rod and optical level.
• Measure distances using tape measures, measuring chains, and electronic measuring equipment.
• Perform other duties as assigned.


Snow Removal Operations:
• Will receive training to acquire a Class B CDL.
• Will be trained to operate snow removal equipment.


Work Environment:
• Most of your workday will be spent in the outdoors during a construction project.
• Environmental conditions can and will include dust, heat, cold, sun, wind, and exposure to vehicular traffic.
• Must have the ability to traverse uneven surfaces and clear obstacles to navigate the work environment.
• Must be able to report to work outside scheduled work hours for snow and other highway emergencies, including nights and weekends.
• Employees are provided with the necessary safety equipment and training.
• Employees are provided with, or are on a crew with, a state furnished vehicle for travel to and from their assigned projects and are directly responsible for the care of their assigned vehicle.
• Employees are provided the necessary materials and equipment to perform assigned duties and directly responsible for the care of those items.



Requirements / Qualifications:




Minimum Qualifications:

Highway Construction Technician I: High school level coursework or the equivalent.


Highway Construction Technician II: Experience in performing activities pertinent to construction work such as surveying, materials testing, or field inspections. OR Coursework or training in construction surveying, materials testing, or inspections practices, and in using associated instruments and equipment. Also, applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license.



Preferred Qualifications:Experience in surveying, road construction, materials testing, record keeping, trigonometry, and geometry. Experience in the operation of heavy equipment or snow removal equipment. Computer experience including word processing, spreadsheets, SiteManager, GEOPAK and MicroStation software.



Other:Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license.Must possess or be able to obtain a Class A or B CDL within 90 days of hire through our in-house CDL training program. Costs to obtain the permit will be paid for by the department. This position may require overnight travel. Regular and reliable attendance is required. In order to be hired at the Highway Construction Technician II level, applicants must have passed the NDOT Math, Highway Plan Reading, and Bridge Plan reading courses or have an Associate's degree in civil engineering technology or a related field which may be substituted for the completion of the NDOT courses. Upon hire, you will be provided with the required training material. This is a self-paced training and once completed provides for promotion to the Highway Construction Tech II level. Typically, this is accomplished within the first 6 months of employment.



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



Knowledge of: standards and specifications used for various types of projects; instruments, equipment, and material used in surveying, testing, and inspection work; all phases of construction and plant inspection and their relationship to each other; surveying and testing techniques. Skill in: calculating mathematical computations involving trigonometry and geometry; applying complex construction inspection, surveying, and materials testing techniques; using personal computers/laptops and associated applications software including drafting, spreadsheet, and word processing software; using technical engineering equipment and instruments used during assigned projects.


Ability to: interact with coworkers, contractors, consultants, and the public to maintain cooperative work relationships; prepare technical reports and maintain detailed records; maintain surveying, testing, and inspection instruments and equipment; lift equipment and samples weighing up to 100 pounds; communicate with others in person, and by telephone, radio, and email; interpret and apply engineering plans and specifications; plan, schedule, and lead the work of coworkers during assigned projects; apply construction procedures in agency construction manuals and directives.


Ability to work and communicate with a team. Ability to work with minimal supervision, be self-motivated, and hold high integrity. Trainable. Ability and willingness to learn and accept challenges by learning and adjusting to new technology and processes. Quality/results-oriented sense of urgency in the performance of duties. Ability to work safely and demonstrate safe and reliable practices and behaviors. Ability to interact in a positive manner and treat co-workers and supervisors with dignity and respect, work to resolve conflicts, and make good decisions using sound judgment, processes, and purpose.


Must be able to report to work outside scheduled work hours for snow and other highway emergencies within 30 minutes under normal driving conditions.
