Position Description

This position is responsible for assuring smooth operation of the clinic patient flow. Employees serve as primary contacts for patients and are responsible for scheduling appointments, preparing necessary paperwork before the patient visits, receiving patients, and maintaining records. In addition, this position is responsible for processing charges for clinic services, filing insurance claims, responding to requests for information from patients and insurance companies and maintaining related information for the department. Employees may have cash handling responsibilities.

Major/Essential Functions

Student Health Services at Texas Tech University is the on-campus medical care clinic exclusively for Texas Tech students.  The mission of Student Health Services is to proudly provide compassionate, high-quality and accessible healthcare to Texas Tech students.


The Patient Services Specialist will help support the mission of Student Health Services by: 


  • Supporting the success of the department by verifying and researching various insurance tasks generated by our registration software.

  • Serving as the initial impression of our clinic by greeting patients with compassion, enthusiasm, and respect.

  • Providing education to patients on our services.

  • Listening carefully to patient needs presented face to face or over the telephone and communicating clear and accurate information in response.

  • Attending Red Raider Orientation (Freshman/Transfer Orientation) and representing Student Health in a professional manner.

  • PSS have additional leadership duties as determined by the PSS Supervisor and will be expected to mentor and train PSS to meet departmental goals and initiatives.

Student Health Services is an exciting place to work.  It is a fast-paced, team-oriented environment where patients always come first.  It is critical for the Patient Service Specialist to demonstrate excellent communication skills, training ability, effective problem solving, and professionalism.  The Patient Services Specialist also must be able to keep calm under pressure and be comfortable working with Providers and Nurses.
