Retention CoordinatorDescription/Job Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Academic Engagement and Partnerships (AVPAEP) or designee, the Retention Coordinator researches, plans, and executes effective strategies and programs that enhance student retention, persistence, graduation rates, and post-graduation opportunities. The coordinator identifies key issues, collects data, and collaborates with relevant staff and faculty regarding planning and process improvements. Maintains appropriate records and provides ongoing progress reports to the AVPAEP or designee. This position requires the ability to effectively engage students, staff, faculty, parents, and community partners.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Assist in the planning, development, and implementation of a comprehensive retention and academic support structure to include workshops, study groups, tutoring, program activities, and other support services to enhance student retention and success.

  • Research and implement, as appropriate, learning support groups, peer coaching models, mentoring models, and learning communities for future programming.

  • Collaborate with faculty and staff across campus to develop retention initiatives utilizing academic support services.

  • Collaborate with faculty advisors and student club leaders to develop programs that promote academic success.

  • Use best practices for programming in retention and student development.

  • Present and publicize programs and services to small and large diverse groups.

  • Monitors individual student academic advancement on an ongoing basis and connects students with intervention support services using early intervention processes and support services.

  • Provide counseling to students on academic warning and probation.

  • Coordinate dismissal appeal process.

  • Utilize computer software to organize and maintain resources and related data.

  • Develop and implement database applications, spreadsheets, document templates and other technology solutions to automate and streamline processes.

  • Manage statistical data for reports.

  • Establish and maintain effective partnerships with staff, faculty, and institutional partners.

  • Establish and maintain respectful and sensitive working relationships with people who are diverse in cultures, language groups, learning styles, and abilities.

  • Communicate information/present materials effectively in a professional and courteous manner to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Ensure that all activities are conducted within established College policies, FERPA guidelines, and other applicable laws pertaining to employment and education.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and five years of related experience in advising, retention, or a counseling position within a college setting.

  • Knowledge of current retention and student success strategies.

  • Experience with diverse populations and providing direct support to students.

  • Experience with research and compiling data.

  • Excellent organizational, analytical and planning skills.

  • Experience with MS Office Suite, student information systems, and degree audit tracking software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Student Services, Education, or other related fields.

  • At least three years of experience working in advising, retention, or a counseling position within a college setting.

  • Knowledge of ADA regulations with regards to making referrals and providing necessary accommodations.

  • Teaching and Community College experience is desired.
