Experience: Advanced degree in Natural Resource Management, Geography, or Geographic lnfo1mation Systems, or closely related field. Must have excellent organizational skills, communication skills, and be technically current in geospatial techniques and platforms. Seeking an enthusiastic team player who is willing to work in a multidisciplinary program. Must have experience with ArcGIS, remote sensing, Adobe and Microsoft software packages. Candidate should be able to collect, prepare, digitize and encode spatial data into ISO-compliant data formats, and convert OPS data into GIS datasets. Must have experience with relational database management, technical writing, and web design and maintenance. Must be comfortable with programming, particularly with Rand PostgreSQL. Must learn LaTeX, Markdown, and Shiny, if not already proficient. Must be prepared to learn new skills and adopt new approaches as field develops.
Preferred:Education: Earned doctorate in Wildlife Science or closely related field.
Experience: Ability to create, maintain and update GIS databases using the ESRI suite of ArcGIS software, as well as non-ESRI products, such as PostgreSQL and PostGIS. Experience with programming API-based routines preferred, as well as experience with server-based data management. Familiarity with web-based GIS applications. Advanced spatial analysis skills and experience with Python and R. Ability to evaluate, analyze and implement GIS info1mation needs and/or assist technical professionals in analysis and assessment of a variety of disciplines and generate repo1ts and produce graphics for use internally and for constituents.
Primary Responsibilities and Duties
Summary:The BRI GIS and Database Specialist position is responsible for developing and maintaining GIS and database management systems that store and organize data for Borderlands Research Institute. This position is in charge of working with Institute research scientists, faculty, and staff to assess needs regarding substantial data storage, and to implement appropriate individualized strategies for data access and utilization. They also are responsible for managing specific, spatially enabled databases, as well as implementation of critical security programs to ensure the safety of stored data.Duties:Essential: Responsible for the administration and technical support to guide data analysis to assist numerous research and habitat management activities. Applies technical knowledge of sampling and spatial statistics to design and manage databases with appropriate data structure for downstream analyses. Develops or supports the development of authoritative reports to enhance and streamline research findings, and/or ecological monitoring findings to assist in land management decisions. Provides quality assurance/quality conh·ol of monitoring data. Manage all relevant BRI databases and associated out-of-database files. Provides technical assistance and support for GIS projects, applications and data. Candidate will develop continuous QA/QC procedures to ensure accurate use of data and resolve conflicting information. Candidate will assist with grant-writing responsibilities to fund new projects and continue the lifespan of existing projects.
