Description: Job Summary

The Area Studies Technical Services Assistant supports the acquisition, cataloging, and maintenance of Chinese and Korean language collections, ensuring efficient processing and accurate records. The role includes both ongoing cataloging and acquisitions duties, as well as additional tasks related to serials check-in, financial processing, and vendor communications.

Position Description

As an Area Studies Technical Services Assistant, you will:

  • Prepare and precheck vendor title lists to identify existing Harvard holdings, preventing duplicate collections during the selection process.
  • Create bibliographic and order records for newly selected titles in Chinese and Korean languages.
  • Search and enter Purchase Order Line (POL) numbers on Electronic Order Delivery (EOD) lists.
  • Check-in Chinese and Korean monographs and serials, ensuring accurate record updates.
  • Perform copy cataloging for Chinese and Korean print books.
  • Photocopy and prepare data for Korean books in the cataloging backlog for submission to original cataloging.
  • Organize cataloging backlogs.
  • Manage the check-in process for over 2,250 Chinese and Korean serials throughout the year.
  • Process payments for invoices from Chinese and Korean vendors (176+ payment lines annually) and handle related financial records.
  • Open and prepare packages containing newly acquired items.
  • Gather serials from stacks and prepare binding slips for end-of-year binding processes.
  • Communicate with vendors to claim missing serial issues, ensuring timely updates to collections.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Basic Qualifications

Three or more years of related experience. Education beyond high school may count toward experience.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

We are looking for people who have:

  • Speaking and reading proficiency in Chinese and Korean.
  • Understanding of MARC cataloging standards and best practices.
  • Proficiency with computer technology (word processing, spreadsheets, databases).

This job is performed in a temperature-controlled office environment. There may be limited exposure to dust and mold

Additional Information

This is a term appointment currently expected to extend through 6/30/25, with potential for renewal subject to funding and departmental need.
