Job Summary

Directs the management and planning of all aspects of building and grounds maintenance, including budget, staffing, and associated programs.



Duties & Responsibilities


  • Responsible for all aspects of developing and executing a comprehensive program for the maintenance and servicing of over 340 buildings encompassing 13.2M square feet of academic and research space, and over 600 acres of maintained grounds. Be accountable for the actions of the team supporting a 24/7/365 operation.
  • Provide leadership, support and guidance to direct reports concerning budget execution, work execution, personnel issues, pre-employment and promotional interviews, training, and mentoring.
  • Supervise Maintenance and Ground management staff regarding daily maintenance and service operations across academic, research and administrative facilities, including preventive maintenance programs with a focus on effective long range lifecycle management.
  • Oversee the delivery of $20M+ in reimbursable charge out work.
  • Leads division initiatives including developing, implementing, and monitoring quality improvement strategies, plan resource allocations, service delivery systems and staffing and work with management staff and the campus community to determine the campus' needs. Be available when needed for after-hours emergency needs.
  • Provide leadership and management of over 400 employees spread among 23 shops, 6 maintenance zones, and tool room. Set the workplace climate and oversee all aspects of personnel management within the division including recruiting and retention, training and professional development, performance standards, safety, and the promotion of comprehensive diversity and inclusion programs for the workforce.
  • Establish and maintain safety guidelines and policies for the division that promote the highest standards of safety while enhancing productivity and the general morale of the workforce.
  • Develop and submit annual budgets and rate structures for division business units. Monitor and adjust annual budget expenditures to meet priority maintenance and service requirements and established operating targets without incurring deficit spending.
  • Develop and use productivity measures and process improvement metrics using work management systems and other tools to enhance division operations.
  • Set the course for the division. Align the goals and objectives of the division with those of F&S and the campus to ensure that the efforts of the division complement the goals and objectives of the university.
  • Make decisions about ongoing distribution of resources among the various divisional units to align services with facility needs and campus requirements. Ensure information is effectively disseminated among campus customers and division employees.
  • Provide expert consultation and assistance to the AVC/ED and to campus leadership in respective functional areas. Work closely with F&S divisional counterparts, staff, and the campus community at large to effectively coordinate and deliver products and services.
  • Acts as the principal F&S liaison to the campus regarding building maintenance issues. leading or serving on campus-wide teams and committees on behalf of or as requested by the AVC/ED.
  • Ensure consistent adherence to F&S and University policies, work rules and guidelines by division employees.
  • Serve as a member of the Facilities & Services Executive Management Team, and act on behalf of the AVC/ED in his/her absence.


Additional Physical Demands

Generally administrative type work but requiring extensive walking for job site reviews and some climbing via ladders in mechanical rooms and other limited use spaces.

Regular visits to job sites and construction activities will result in occasionally hazardous and uncomfortable environment.

The Director is expected to support the philosophies of F&S and U. of I.

The Director must exemplify high standards of competence, leadership, loyalty, service, and dedication.

The Director is expected to develop and promote safe operations programs, provide safety training, support departmental safety initiatives and programs and monitor personnel to assure safety and security policies are being followed.



Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, facilities management, public administration, or a related field.

  • 10 years of progressively responsible experience directing institutional facilities management and maintenance.

  • 5 years of managerial/supervisory experience that provide extensive knowledge of maintenance, infrastructure management, and construction practices and procedures across a broad range of disciplines, including advanced building systems.

  • Experience with budget development and execution at the institutional level with a demonstrated track record of meeting financial operating targets.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in engineering, architecture, facilities management, public administration, or a related field.

  • Experience working in a union/prevailing wage environment.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge and experience with work management systems used to manage maintenance operations.
  • The ability to develop and effectively implement and utilize Key Performance Indicator (KPI's) and other business metric tools.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to articulate ideas and processes and give clear direction and guidance both orally and in writing.


Appointment Information


This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the search close date. The budgeted salary range for this position is $155,000-165,000/year. Final salary offered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
