The University of Iowa Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is seeking a Sonographer. The sonographer will perform obstetric and gynecologic ultrasounds and ultrasound-guided procedures under physician supervision. This position includes moving and lifting equipment and patients. Weekends, holiday rotations, and travel to outreach clinics is required as part of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Ultrasound Service.
Department Summary: We provide consultation, comprehensive treatment planning and a broad range of services for patients with normal and high-risk pregnancies and for gynecology, including oncology and reproductive endocrinology. Our comprehensive medical, surgical, and nursing services span the full spectrum of all obstetric and gynecologic patients at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. In addition to patient care, the department is noted for its strong educational programs for sonography students, medical students, residents, fellows, and practicing physicians. Basic and clinical research in reproductive medicine is an important departmental activity.
This position will be expected to float between all Obstetrics and Gynecology clinic locations. Applicant will need to be able travel to University of Iowa Outreach Clinics or off-site locations and available to work weekend and holiday rotations.
Position Responsibilities:
Takes appropriate number of pictures to document anatomy and pathology for specified exams according to established protocols.
Utilizes sterile technique in accordance with established departmental policy in performing Doppler ultrasound examinations and invasive procedures.
Assists and instructs residents and/or students in clinical aspects of ultrasound.
Produces and maintains ultrasound examination reports.
Assists patients with telemedicine encounters for physician video consultations after ultrasound examinations as needed.
Attends all required in-service education and department programs while meeting standards.
Education Requirements
CAAHEP accredited or equivalent program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography or Vascular Technology, or
Completion of a two-year or more accredited health science program (i.e. Radiologic Technology, Medical Technology, Nursing, etc.) plus completion of a twelve-month formal education program in Sonography, or
Completion of a bachelor's degree plus completion of a twelve-month formal education program in Sonography.
Position Requirements
Registration by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in OB/GYN
Valid Iowa driver's license and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety Standards.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Certification in scanning nuchal lucency by the Fetal Medicine Foundation within 9 months following the start of employment.
Ability to move 25 - 50 lbs. on a consistent basis and 100 lbs. on an occasional basis.
Desired Qualifications
Experience performing invasive studies including CVS, amniocentesis, cordocentesis and saline infusion sonography.
Experience scanning high risk obstetrics and fetal anomalies, monitoring follicular development during iatrogenic ovulatory cycles, and 3-D scanning with reconstruction.
