Job Description:Grading Roller Operator
Perform duties to operate self-propelled and pull type steel drum, rubber tire, sheep foot, and similar type rollers to achieve compaction of earth and/or gravel whereby densities have been obtained and to provide desired strengths to carry specified load without settlement.
Job Duties:
Check all fluids at the beginning of the engine startup for the day, continue to monitor gauges and fluid levels throughout the day during operation.
Monitor the operation and function of the roller throughout the workday. Maintain an awareness of the unusual noises or operation and bring any exceptions to the attention of the supervisor.
Perform light mechanical adjustments and/or assist mechanic in performing repair on equipment, assist with the lubrication and fueling of the roller.
The ability to perform a variety of task which may include compacting asphalt as well as assist related crew in placing earth and/or gravel, dumping trucks, or other such duties in site preparation.
The ability to operate the roller in a manner to assure the safety of personnel around the equipment. Operate the roller on terrain and fill/placed materials as to not cause damage to the equipment or injury to the operator, operate the roller around structures, curb and gutter, tools, and traffic as not to cause damage.
Keep roller in a clean and orderly condition.
Follow all state/federal safety rules and company policies and procedures.
Assist crew with laborious work when not operating roller.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge:
Simple reference to use of machine gauges and operating levers where little interpretation is required.
Experience:
Over 3 months and up to 12 months to become familiar with the operation of the roller on different types of surface materials and terrain.
Initiative and Ingenuity:
Use of some judgment to comply with instructions and initiative to take independent action to perform prescribed routines, methods, and practices involving the making of minor decisions.
Physical Demand:
Frequent lifting or moving average weight materials of up to 40 pounds. Lifting come in to play when operators is assisting crew with other duties in site preparation.
Physical Activity:
Position requires the ability to climb onto machine, the ability to grasp control levers, to push and pull levers, such physical activity operate control levers is repetitive in motion of the wrist, hands, and or fingers. Position requires the ability to express or exchanged ideas by means of spoken word and the ability to perceive sounds and receive detailed information through oral communications.
Operator must be able to make fine discrimination in equipment noises which may indicate mechanical problems.
Position requires standing and walking to assist crew with laborious work when not operating roller.
Mental or Visual Demand:
Frequent mental or visual attention, where the flow of work is intermittent or the operation involves waiting for a machine or process to complete a cycle, with some checking, position requires visual acuity including depth perception and field of vision.
Responsibility for Equipment or Process:
Responsible for preventing damage to equipment due to improper operation, handling or use.
Responsibility for Material or Product:
Responsible for preventing damage to material by over rolling, under rolling, or breakage due to rolling over some material like curb or valves.
Responsibility for Safety of Others:
Normal care required in operating equipment or performing duties to prevent injury to others, an accident should it occur would result in loss time injuries such as crushed hand or foot loss of fingers or toes.
Responsible for Work of Others:
Responsible for own work.
Working Conditions:
Disagreeable working conditions, exposed to any number of conditions such as dirt, heat, fumes, noises, vibration to the extent of being objectionable with several present at the same time.
Hazard:
Injuries should they occur could result in partial incapacitation due to burns, loss or breakage of arm or leg
