The Environmental Health & Safety Department at Old Dominion University is seeking candidates for the Radiation Safety Officer (full-time, 12 month) position. The Radiation Safety Officer will serve as the University’s Radiation Safety Officer and ensure the University’s compliance with the regulations of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a Type “A” Broad Scope License and the Virginia Department of Radiological Health. This position will also manage the University’s Laser Safety Program and the shipping of Dangerous Goods.
Required Education: Graduation from a college or university with a degree in radiation science, health physics, environmental science, industrial hygiene, occupational safety, safety engineering, or a related scientific field.
Required Qualifications: A considerable knowledge of health physics and radiological health principles and practices; federal and state regulations to include NRC, OSHA, EPA and DOT as they relate to the control of radioactive material and radiation-producing devices; instrumentation and techniques used to detect and analyze radiation; non-ionizing radiation safety principles and practices and the shipping of international and domestic dangerous goods. Computer literate in word processing, database, presentation and spreadsheet programs. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing; interpret and apply state and federal laws, regulations and guidelines; plan and manage own work activities. Considerable experience in a radiation protection program that is similar in scope or larger than the University’s, per NRC Guide 10-5.
Special Licenses, registration, or certification: Must possess appropriate qualifications as prescribed in NRC Regulation Guide 10-5 to be approved by the VDH Radiological Health program as an RSO for a Broad Scope License. Must have Hazardous Waste and Emergency Response Training and annual refresher. Must be qualified to wear respiratory protection.
Conditions of Employment: Emergency response for HAZMAT emergencies as needed. Completion of Statement of Personal Economic Interest is required upon hire (for certain classified positions). This position is designated as sensitive. A fingerprint-based criminal history check will be required of the final candidate. This is an open until filled recruitment.
