PURPOSE
The Quarry Superintendent, reporting to the Production Manager, is responsible for overseeing mine planning and directing quarry operations to ensure the supply of raw materials for cement production while maximizing reserves. This role also includes supervising the mobile equipment shop and driving continuous improvement through the enhancement of operational practices and execution of capital projects.
Position based in Midlothian, TX
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
MINE PLANNING & ENGINEERING
Oversee mine planning at Midlothian Quarry.
Manage capital projects related to mine development and planning at Midlothian.
Execute core drilling or reverse circulation drilling program to delineate Midlothian deposit/reserves for effective reserve modeling based on chemistry.
Develop and maintaining short- and long-term mining plans as needed.
Ensure quality standards and drive technical excellence for mining operation.
Performs financial evaluations and cost analysis for operating and capital project justification.
QUARRY OPERATIONS
Ensure compliance with MSHA, Company and QC/QA requirements.
Provide safety training for all employees as required my MSHA.
Maintains strong and effective relationships with all internal and external stakeholders.
Develop, train personnel and appraise performance.
Identify, communicate, and resolve safety hazards.
Evaluate existing processes and equipment on-site, including mine contractor management
Develop plans for short/long-term operating objectives including production, maintenance, budgets, and preparation of AFE's.
Direct daily operations of the Quarry to meet raw materials requirements for cement production.
Maintain and analyze mining records and monthly production performance to establish most efficient methods.
Assist in the preparation of weekly and monthly reports, as needed.
Supervise personnel in all phases of the Quarry operation.
MOBILE EQUIPMENT
Supervise the maintenance of all plant mobile equipment.
Purchase supplies and maintenance items to maintain optimal levels, maximizing efficiency and minimizing downtime
Develop and maintain a five-year mobile equipment asset replacement strategy
Manage preventive maintenance (PM) compliance of all mobile equipment assets
Supervise quality repairs to mobile equipment resulting from corrective inspections
Plan and execute yearly overhauls and rebuilds of heavy equipment during non-peak production periods
Conduct audits of fixed and mobile equipment assets, providing direction and recommendations for repairs, upgrades or assets replacement.
Undertake other projects or assignments as assigned by Production or Plant Manager.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in mining engineering or equivalent experience
Minimum 5 years of experience, preferably in mine planning, geologic modeling and quarry operations
Working knowledge of material handling systems, process design and crushing and conveyor equipment; knowledge of quality control in mine production a plus
Project management and installation experience
Field surveying knowledge and skills; experience in mine planning utilizing the Carlson Mining software
Excellent time management skills: ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks; good planning skills
Strategic thinking and planning ability
Effective oral and written communication skills; excellent report writing
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Must be a people person, team player and willing to work in a team environment.
Excellent communication skills are a must.
Must have the ability and willingness to travel as needed.
Working knowledge of design and drafting using CAD.
Self-motivator and able to work without supervision.
Possess a professional manner and communicate and relate to different personalities under stressful situations with time pressures.
Proficient in MS applications (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook) and AutoCAD.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to physically travel to job sites and work on and around mine site.
Ability to work on uneven terrain related with mine sites.
Ability to lift and carry up to 35 pounds.
Must be willing to work in all weather conditions including heat, cold, dust, noise, etc.
Must be able to perform duties in a safe manner.
Must be able to wear all required safety equipment.
Must possess good vision to perceive depth at close range and distances up to 150 feet.
Must have ability to bend, stoop, climb and reach around equipment.
Must not be afraid of heights.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The Quarry Superintendent will work in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, ice, rain, and high humidity. The role requires working in various plant environments and involves exposure to vibrating equipment, mechanical and electrical hazards, and heights. The incumbent may also encounter dust, cement, clay, gypsum, sand, diesel exhaust, lubricants, solvents, and various fuels (refer to MSDS for details). As this facility operates 24/7, the work schedule may vary according to operational needs, including long shifts, night shifts, and weekends.
