Position Summary:
The Afya Foundation seeks a resourceful and hands-on Director of Development who is experienced across all areas of Fundraising. Candidate should feel at home in a growing non-profit environment, where conceiving a robust development vision, cultivating donor relationships, and developing department processes are all vital to organizational growth.
Overseeing an annual operating budget of $5 million, the Director of Development plays a pivotal role in driving Afya's fundraising initiatives. Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, this dynamic leader is responsible for planning, organizing, and executing a comprehensive fundraising strategy that encompasses major gift cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship to achieve annual goals. Additional responsibilities include overseeing annual giving campaigns, planned giving programs, foundation and government grant support, corporate partnerships, and the successful execution of special events.
The Director of Development collaborates closely with the CEO and Board of Directors to shape and implement the organization's comprehensive Fundraising Strategy. This hybrid role includes occasional local travel to support key initiatives and donor engagement.
The Director will be responsible for hiring and leading a small Development Team that will include institutional support for Private and Non-Private Philanthropy (including government, institutional, and corporate)
In addition, the Director of Development works with team members across departments to ensure the successful execution of marketing, communications, research, and outreach efforts relating to fundraising.
Essential Job Functions:
The Director of Development is expected to collaborate with and provide guidance to all Afya team members to ensure communications and messaging is consistent with the development goals and to meet programmatic needs, including new initiatives. Collaborates with the CEO to develop and implement an Annual Philanthropy Plan supporting the organization's vision including:
Fundraising Strategy & Execution • Direct and execute major fundraising drives, campaigns, and annual mailings. • Expand the major gift program, focusing on the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of corporate donors, high net worth individuals, and foundations. • Manage the prospect research process and donor cultivation. • Oversee donor portfolio management, with a focus on top-level donors and prospects for principal-level gifts.
Donor & Stakeholder Relations • Build and maintain strong long-term relationships with key individual and foundation/grant funders. • Conduct personal meetings, outreach, and follow-ups to meaningfully engage donors and prospects. • Work with the CEO and board nominating committee to identify and recruit new board members with philanthropic capacity. • Build relationships with current board members and support the CEO, fundraising volunteers, and staff in identifying and soliciting charitable gifts. • Serve as an internal and external advocate for Afya's programs and operations, acting as a compelling public speaker.
Team Leadership & Departmental Oversight • Lead, inspire, and mentor direct reports, ensuring alignment with overall organizational and departmental goals. • Oversee department operations including materials production, data management, correspondence, gift processing, finance reconciliation, research, event support, and meeting logistics. • Develop and prepare fundraising materials such as letters, proposals, and stewardship reports. • Integrate the use of Blackbaud Raiser's Edge in fundraising efforts and ensure best practices are followed.
?Board & Committee Administration • Manage the administration of board meetings and committees. • Report at and between Board meetings, sharing successes and challenges, while actively engaging board members as partners.
Collaboration & Strategic Vision • Participate in the management and strategic vision of Afya by collaborating with the Senior Management Team on fundraising strategies to meet programmatic needs and new initiatives. • Track and report Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to the Senior Management Team on a quarterly basis.
Position Job Requirements: • Required minimum BA/BS degree • Minimum 5-7 years of experience in development, with a focus on major gift fundraising across diverse donor sectors. • Goal driven, self-starter who will initiate donor visits and fundraising calls • Ability to take initiative and prioritize multiple tasks • Strong interpersonal and engagement skills • Strong written and verbal communication skills • Strong leadership skills and supervisory experience • Experience or alignment with Afya's mission preferred • Ability, desire and proven track record of cultivating external relationships • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail that exhibit follow-through on tasks and goals • Candidate should demonstrate a strong grasp of development and fundraising best practices to optimize strategic planning, donor engagement, and revenue generation. • Display positive attitude, common sense, concern for people and community, and a genuine Interest in and passion for Afya's principles and mission • Demonstrated track record of leading innovative, strategic, superior fundraising initiatives • Demonstrated success in major gifts work, including cultivating and closing high-level gifts and knowledge of moves-management fundraising. • An engaging relationship builder with portfolio experience of significant donors across all revenue categories. • Experience working successfully with a board of trustees and senior executives to maximize their organizational engagement and fundraising success. • Excellent team leadership and management skills with an ability to inspire, encourage and assist team members in reaching ambitious fundraising goals while fostering support and collaborations across the private philanthropy, grant, marketing, and volunteer functions. • Technological savvy and experience with databases such as Blackbaud NXT.
Job Type: Hybrid/ Flex Schedule
Salary: $110,000-$120,000
