Chief Politics Writer

Cleveland.com seeks a Chief Politics Writer as part of a dynamic team covering Ohio politics Statehouse situations, Republican and Democratic party insider information and elected officials in Ohio. The writer speaks with authority, offering analysis the stories behind the stories, the unanswered questions and more. Basically, this writer will produce content for cleveland.com and our newsletters that mirrors the political discussions on the Today in Ohio podcast - Bold thinking, the calling out of lies and thoughts about where stories are headed. The most important quality for a candidate for this position is bold thinking.

What you will be doing:

  • Consume politics reporting from myriad sources to see how Ohio is being positioned nationally and relate that positioning to audiences of our platforms.

  • Participate in the team that produces the weekday Capitol Letter newsletter about politics and Statehouse happenings.

  • Get sourced in both state political parties and provide analysis of their strategies for winning Ohio offices.

  • Coverage of the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party, which has outsized influence on government in the county.

  • Build a statewide brand for expertise and out-of-the-box thinking regarding Ohio politics.

  • Write journalistically sound content for use in all media platforms, existing and future, that is: balanced and factual but with an educated point of view.

  • Engage in story aggregation and topical link-posting.

  • Maintain operational communication with editor and, when applicable, production center.

  • Use hardware, software and cloud-based equipment and systems for direct-to-web production and engagement, including but not limited to:
    • a posting photographs and short videos to the web and any internal production systems
    • remote web reporting, using laptops and smart phones

  • Utilizes our news organization's audience traffic tracking systems and analytical reports.

  • Other duties as assigned.

The base salary range is $58,000 to $70,000 per year.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Degree in Journalism or Communications or related field preferred.

  • 5+ years' journalism experience with a proven ability in reporting and writing.

  • Skilled at building, maintaining and engaging an active audience.

  • Proven ability to work independently under deadline pressure and prioritize tasks appropriately, handling complex assignments.

  • Demonstrated solid reporting, writing and organizational skills.

  • Solid understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics, story structure and critical thinking.

  • Expertise to utilize a broad set of tools to tell stories and engage the audience.

  • Leverages relationships with sources to deliver content that differentiates the organization from competitors.

  • Ability to work remotely.

  • The ability to move to greater Cleveland, where this position will be based.

  • Extensive computer use required.

  • Ability to work flexible work schedules, including nights, weekends and holidays, as needed.

  • Some travel required.

  • This job requires reliable transportation to meet with sources and cover events.
