Job Description:

Harlem Children's Zone (HCZ), a world-renowned education and poverty-fighting organization based in New York, seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated, mission-aligned Associate Director for our Development Department.


The Associate Director will bring a passion for Harlem Children's Zone's mission: breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty with comprehensive, on-the-ground programming that builds opportunities for children and families to thrive in school, work, and life.


HCZ's Development Department is seeking a skilled and experienced Associate Director, Individual Philanthropy to support the robust fundraising of our dynamic team. In this full-time position, the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in supporting the Individual Philanthropy vertical. The Associate Director, Individual Philanthropy will be responsible for generating support for HCZ's core mission and growing fundraising efforts by building strong relationships with current and future donors, strategic planning, and leveraging expertise in major gifts to drive revenue and meet fundraising goals. With an overall portfolio goal of $1M plus, the Associate Director will ensure timely and efficient workflow and project management across a given base of assigned donors in the five-to-seven-figure giving range. Reporting to the Director of Individual Philanthropy, the Associate Director will provide leadership and fundraising best practices to the Individual Philanthropy Officer, will manage the Individual Philanthropy Associate, and will work closely with the Institutional Giving and Development Operations teams to facilitate strategic, collaborative fundraising efforts for HCZ's core mission programs. The Associate Director will implement a best-practice approach to the solicitation and stewardship process. The successful candidate will balance an independent initiative with effective collaboration across Development and the organization. This position is ideal for a seasoned fundraiser with 3-5 years of proven experience soliciting and closing five-to-seven-figure gifts. The successful candidate will be creative, results-oriented, and skilled in cultivating long-term donor relationships. In addition, they will have an outgoing personality, a sense of humor, pro-active ambition, and a passion for contributing to the mission of a pre-eminent Black-led, Black, and Brown-serving organization in the anti-poverty, education, and social services space.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with 3-5 years of successful experience in major gifts fundraising


Who you are

  • Must possess strong written, oral, and presentation communication skills, as well as experience in developing clear and concise major gift proposals.
  • Must have a proven track record of cultivating and securing five-figure gifts and above, as well as developing cultivation and solicitation strategies
  • Advanced interpersonal communication skills with keen attention to detail
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to handle multiple projects and competing deadlines
  • Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office products (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Experience and proficiency with Raiser's Edge or equivalent software
  • Passion for HCZ's mission

What you'll do

  • Manage and grow a targeted portfolio of 150-200 individual major donors (at the five-to-seven figure giving levels) aligned with multi-year goals toward increased revenuedocumenting all moves management processes in the CRM database (NXT/Raiser's Edge).
  • Proactively identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors and prospects to meet and increase year-over-year revenue.
  • Enthusiastically cultivates a comprehensive understanding of HCZ's priorities and initiatives, translating them into fundraising opportunities.
  • Manage the Individual Philanthropy Associate to ensure the timely execution of the IP teams projects, communications, and administrative duties.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to the Individual Philanthropy Officer by sharing expertise on fundraising best practices to drive revenue and meet the Individual Philanthropy team's fundraising goals.
  • Collaborate with the Research Manager to identify and pipeline annual fund donors into the Individual Philanthropy Officer and Associate Director of Individual Philanthropy portfolios accordingly.
  • In partnership with Development leadership and guidance from the Director of Individual Philanthropy, establish and implement best practice approaches and long-term engagement strategies to deepen donor commitment, increase giving, and broaden the individual donor base; these include calls, meetings, and program site visits.
  • Work closely with the Director of Individual Philanthropy to refine and implement systems and processes, utilizing the skillsets of our Research Manager and gift processing Development Operations Associate, creating efficiencies for the Individual Philanthropy team and Development overall.
  • Collaboratively develop analytics and reports that quarterly track year-to-date progress in areas such as leadership giving, constituency giving, rates of participation, number of gifts, average gift size, and year-over-year variances by constituencies. Analyze trends and identify areas of strategic growth.
  • With the Associate Director, Grants Management, create templated and tailored correspondence, including presentations, solicitations, proposals, appeals, and stewardship materials to engage donors and prospects.
  • Work closely with the Director of Individual Philanthropy to help manage the Planned Giving program.
  • Organize and staff annual donor cultivation and fundraising events.
  • Other projects and responsibilities as assigned.

  • Hybrid (3 days in office/2 days remote)
