This role is designated as essential and requires incumbents to report to work onsite. Telecommuting is not available for this role.
Maintenance Mechanic -
This Maintenance Mechanic Apprentice position is offered under the terms of the Stanford University and SEIU Apprenticeship Program. The purpose of this program is to train an Apprentice to be a Building Maintenance Mechanic. Upon acceptance into the program the Apprentice will be assigned to the Maintenance Operations team; successful completion of the Apprenticeship Program will develop skills in building systems maintenance.
The program consists of full-time (40 hours per week) on-the-job training and two evenings (3 hours each evening) of classroom education. Classroom training will take place at San Jose City College. The Apprentice will work under the direction of a supervisor, work with a journeyperson, and be assigned a mentor. Apprentices will be exposed to various trade duties covering the curriculum coursework. Excellent attendance, engagement, and performance at both on-the-job tasks and the classroom portion of the program is a strict requirement. Through classroom work and on-the-job training, apprentices will be trained in the basic skills and tools of the trade.
Successful completion of this four-year program does not guarantee a position at Stanford but will prepare the candidate for application for a Maintenance Person III Building Maintenance Technician position supporting the HVAC shop.

SUMMARY OF THIS POSITION:
Reporting to the Assistant Director of HVAC and performing work under direction, the Apprentice performs/assists with performing all aspects of building mechanical and electrical systems including troubleshooting, repairs, preventive maintenance, and installations for all Residential and Dining Enterprises facilities.
General:
Under supervision, performs/assists with performing troubleshooting repair, and preventive maintenance of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system and equipment. Additionally, emergency response work is performed, and repairs assigned which may include work outside of primary trade.
Under direction, checks, maintains, repairs, and installs all air conditioning-related equipment, and evaporative cooling systems.Repairs or replaces fan coils/air handlers, condensing units, and compressors; troubleshoots equipment, makes repairs to equipment, recharges units with refrigerant, and checks for leaks. Brazes, cuts, bends, solders, threads, and assembles pipes and fittings.
Under direction, performs troubleshooting, repairs, and preventive maintenance for ventilation systems and heating systems - forced air, hydronic, steam systems, and related controls. Includes boilers/related equipment, rooftop equipment, and water and steam service to fans for evaporative cooling or steam or hydronic heating.
Under direction, performs electrical work as required related to servicing HVAC equipment; typical line voltage of 120V and 208V AC, low voltage controls. Follows proper lock out/tag out procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:
·At least 18 years old.
·Ability to perform heavy manual labor in all types of outside weather conditions.

·Must successfully pass a background check.
·Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
·Must pass an aptitude test (math, English, and critical thinking) with a score of at least 80%.
·Must be able to work full-time and attend evening educational classes.
·Ability to perform assigned work at a level appropriate for a Maintenance Mechanic Apprentice.
·Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
·Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and clothing as needed.
·Ability to learn and apply safe work practices, including but not limited to, hazardous waste management and handling, Injury and Illness Prevention Program, Confined Space procedures, and chemical safe practices.
·Ability to perform various maintenance and moving tasks including but not limited to, working from step ladders, must be able to lift heavy materials frequently each day, work overhead, kneel, stoop, stand, crawl, or sit for long periods, work in all types of weather.
·Ability to respond to emergency calls in the evening and on weekends.
·Willingness to work variable shifts and nights or weekends.
Certificates and Licenses Required:
Valid California Class C Noncommercial Driver's License.
Physical Requirements:
·Ability to perform heavy manual labor in all types of outside weather conditions.
·Constantly stand, and walk ∙ Frequently grasp forcefully, lift up to 20 pounds.
·Occasionally kneel, crawl, twist, bend, stoop, squat, climb (ladders and scaffolds), reach above shoulders, use light/fine grasping, and lift 21-40 pounds.
·Rarely perform seated work, desk-based tasks, use a telephone, write by hand sort/file paperwork, scrub, sweep, chop, mix, and lift over 40 pounds.
·Visual acuity including color vision.
Working Conditions:
·May be exposed to radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers, noise >80db, allergens, biohazards, chemicals, and asbestos.
·May work in confined spaces, at heights from 4 to over 10 feet, and be exposed to hot and cold temperature extremes.

The expected pay for this position is $30.70 per hour. Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
