Under moderate supervision, performs technical tasks that support clinical operations, assists with direct or indirect preoperative nursing tasks. Patients served may include neonate to geriatrics.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: To qualify for the position, the candidate must have a high school diploma or equivalent. The candidate must successfully complete hospital and unit based orientation. Prefer one year experience as operating room assistant.



CONDITIONS: The employee will remain within this job category for a probationary period of ninety days. With a satisfactory criteria based performance evaluation, the employee will advance to a regular status employee. If the evaluation is not satisfactory, the employee will be terminated.



SKILLS & ABILITIES:


  • Demonstrate proficiency in skills delineated on unit skills checklist

  • Demonstrate proficiency in communication, both written and verbal

  • Ability to ensure the confidentiality and rights of patients, and confidentiality of all hospital and departmental documents

  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision

  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively as a team member

  • Identifies, documents and reports risk management issues to Clinical Coordinator and/or Director

  • Identifies cost containment measures and makes recommendations for implementation


LANGUAGE SKILLS: The ability to read and write. Ability to communicate effectively.



MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with solution/mixture measurements.



REASONING ABILITY: Ability to interpret and understand chemical/biological indicators, sometimes complex instructions, procedures, graphite data and regulatory guidelines.



CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS: Heart saver CPR required or must take first available class.



PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Will work in a clean, well-lighted environment with fluctuating temperatures. Constant walking, standing, bending and stooping. Pushing and pulling heavy objects such as gurneys, patient beds, and OR beds. Must be able to lift patients, heavy boxes weighing up to 40 pounds, and instrument sets weighing up to 20 pounds; must be able to lift surgical supplies above the head. Must be able to read, write and understand English. Must be able to read supply labels and surgical schedules, patient identification bracelets, and policies and procedures and written instructions. Must be able to read fine print. Must be able to hear and follow verbal instructions. Potential for exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials, requiring the observance of Standard Precautions and safe handling practices. Must wear hospital provided scrub attire and employee photo identification badge while on duty.
