POSITION SUMMARY:

The Department of Surgery and Division of Acute Care Surgery and Tampa General Hospital (TGH) are seeking an experienced and dynamic Chief of Surgical Critical Care to lead our section of Surgical Critical Care. The ideal candidate will possess a strong clinical background in leadership and a proven record in mentoring education, academic achievement and research. Specific role - chief of surgical critical care and program director surgical critical care fellowship.

Key Responsibilities:
- Lead Surgical Critical Care within the Division of Acute Care Surgery
- Lead the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship as the Program Director
- Lead the Surgery/Trauma ICU and the Surgical Step-Down Unit
- Lead the surgical critical care research
- Engage in clinical practice, academic activities, and research to maintain and enhance the divisions mission

The new Chief of Surgical Critical Care will report to the Chief of the Division of Acute Care Surgery. They will also have dual reporting to the Tampa General Hospital (TGH) ICU Governance Leadership.

Tampa General Hospital is a quaternary flagship hospital of the TGH Health System with greater than 1100 bed hospital and over 270 ICU beds. It is a top 50% US News and World Report. And 2nd highest in the state of Florida. TGH is the only Level I Trauma Center in West Central Florida and the first and only verified American College of Surgeons Level I trauma center in the state of Florida. The trauma program breakdown is 85%blunt and 15% penetrating. TGH is designated by the Florida Department of Health as a Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program (BSCIP) and is one of four burn centers in Florida verified by the American Burn Association. The Surgery/Trauma ICU is a 18 bed unit and the Surgical Step Down Unit is a 9 bed unit which admits trauma/emergency general surgery, transplant (liver, kidney, pancreas), Complex Oncology: (Surgical oncology, GYN Onc, ENT, Urology), OB/GYN, Plastics, Orthopedics. Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at USF/TGH

Started in 2004, the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at The University of South Florida is a one-year ACGME accredited Surgical Critical Care Fellowship with an optional second year of training in trauma/trauma research. Training is completed at Tampa General Hospital's Level I Trauma Center caring for 3200 trauma patients/year. Additional critical care experience is the SICU at the James A. Haley V.A. Hospital near the University of South Florida campus.
The academic rank for this position will be commensurate with the applicant?s credentials.

RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • CLINICAL DUTIES: Candidates will be expected to provide intensive care clinical services in the surgical trauma ICU providing day and nighttime inhouse coverage. Admits complex trauma and emergency general surgery type cases. In addition, it admits transplant, general surgery, surgical oncology, OB/GYN oncology, ENT. Collect appropriate history, performs physical exam, orders diagnostic tests and formulates diagnosis and treatment plans. Provides health counseling.
  • TEACHING DUTIES: Candidates must have recognized skills in the education of residents and medical students and will be expected to active participants in the Department's residency training and educational programs and well versed in educational experience of medical students, residents, and clinical fellows.
  • ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES: Timely completion of all training courses required by hospital/trauma program including Code of Conduct course and coding courses.
  • OTHER DUTIES: The new Chief of Surgical Critical Care will report to the Chief of the Division of Acute Care Surgery. They will also have dual reporting to the Tampa General Hospital (TGH) ICU Governance Leadership.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM:


  • Doctoral/Medical degree from an accredited institution or the highest degree appropriate in the field of specialization with a demonstrated record of achievement in teaching, academic research, and service. Must meet university criteria for appointment to the rank of Associate, or Full Professor. For Associate or Full Professor - Normally will have produced creative work, professional writing or research in refereed and other professional journals and be a recognized authority in the field of specialization.
  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITION:

    • Responsible to a Chair or other appropriate higher-level administrator of a State university.
    • Responsible for teaching, research, service, and related administrative activities.
    • Responsible for academic advising and related activities.
    • May represent the university, college/school, or department.

PREFERRED:


  • Board certification in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care.
  • +5 yrs experience and established expertise in Acute Care Surgery with a distinguished record of academic excellence in research.
  • Experience in leadership roles, particularly in resource management, mentorship, and education.
  • Strong clinical focus with demonstrated clinical excellence.
  • Candidate must be Board Certified/Board Eligible.
