Smurfit Westrock (SW) Analytical Services Group supports the company's paperboard, and packaging testing needs for customers, manufacturing locations, and research initiatives. A scientist's role in the lab is to perform a variety of qualitative and quantitative analysis on samples submitted to the lab in support of business needs.
How you will impact WestRock:
Demonstrate initiative to develop new test methods and learn complex instruments.
Perform analysis and characterization of the samples submitted to the analytical group.
Interpret laboratory results and present reports to cross-functional teams with quick turnaround.
Able to perform multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
Ensure the oversee analytical instrumentation and perform routine calibration, troubleshooting and maintenance
Train other teammates on instruments as needed
Actively participate in and support the SW safety program.
What you need:
PhD or master's degree in chemistry/chemical engineering or related field is required.
3-5 years of experience with GC-MS, Headspace and Pyr-GC-MS, sample preparation, quantitative data analysis is required
Experience with Shimadzu and Agilent GC-MS systems is a plus
Knowledge of paper and packaging science is valuable
Familiarization with FT-IR, ICP, UV-vis and/or HPLC is a plus.
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, manage competing priorities and demonstrate initiative.
Good written and oral communication skills.
Minimal travel (<10%)
