Our Opportunity

An opportunity exists for a driven and outcomes focused engineer or scientist to join Fortescue's recently established Colorado Innovation Center. Reporting to the Manager of Colorado Innovation Center, the Principal, R&D Delivery position will work directly with technical subject matter experts to support the identification, development, and delivery of technology research programs across our portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership:

Assist with developing and implementing R&D strategy in alignment with the company's overall goals.

Lead cross-functional teams to drive innovation and ensure successful project delivery.
  • Project and Portfolio Management:

Work with technical program leads to oversee the planning, execution, and completion of R&D projects.

Identify and implement opportunities to accelerate R&D programs to commercial impact.

Assist with management of the R&D portfolio including implementation of tools to report progress and performance.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration:

Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to align R&D activities with business needs.

Communicate progress and outcomes to senior management and other key stakeholders.
  • Talent Development:

Foster a culture driven by Fortescue's Values (for example, Safety, Frugality, Stretch Targets, Generating Ideas, and others).

Mentor and develop R&D team members to build a high-performing team.

Identify skill gaps and provide training and development opportunities.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Advanced degree in engineering or science (PhD preferred)
  • 10+ years of experience in technology innovation, research, and development, with a proven track record of leading and delivering complex projects.
  • Experience in managing cross-functional teams and collaborating with various internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience managing federally-funded (e.g. DOE, DoD, NSF) research projects preferred
  • Extensive knowledge of technologies relevant to green energy, decarbonization, and heavy industry.
  • Experience with scale-up, modelling, and economic analysis of novel technologies, processes, and commercial applications is preferred.
  • Proficiency in project management tools and methodologies.
  • Understanding of intellectual property development, management and regulations.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to mentor and develop team members.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with senior management and other stakeholders.
