The Director of Government Affairs plans, organizes, coordinates, and implements the Government Relations program of the American Institute of Architects New York State.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Will include the following, but other duties may be assigned.
• Work effectively with and respond to requests from the Governor of New York and other statewide government officers, departments and agencies of the Executive branch, the New York State Legislature, local governments, the private sector, and non-governmental organizations.
• Provide detailed analysis and evaluation of legislation pertaining to architecture and related professions, coordinating communication between the Legislature, its staff, and AIA New York State.
• Develop legislative reports for the Board of Directors and Advocacy Committee and make recommendations to the Executive Vice President, the Executive Committee, and the Board of Directors on legislation.
• Work with the Executive Vice President, organizational leadership and members to develop and effectuate legislative and policy work plans and strategies.
• Promote the knowledge and use of AIA New York State resources.
• Prepare correspondence and reports for the Executive Vice President, the Executive Committee, the Board of Directors, and other special committees and task forces.
• Work with the communications staff to produce the AIANYS Legislative update, Capitol Columns, three times a year.
• Act as the staff liaison and advisor to the Political Action Committee.
• Produce and file required New York State lobbying reports.
• Coordinate and collaborate with the AIA New York State Legislative counsel and team and work with other AIANYS staff as needed. Act as staff liaison to the AIANYS Advocacy Committee and project teams.
• There is minimal travel to attend AIA National Legislative Conferences, AIA New York State Conferences, and professional development opportunities

Qualifications

Outstanding written and analytical skills and the ability to communicate information.
• Bachelor's degree in political science, public relations, or related field required.
• Three years of experience in government relations, advocacy, or public policy required.
• Experience with reporting sites such as the New York State Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government.
• Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Proficiencywith Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
• Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and workload.
