The Packaging Engineer should have a strong technical background and experience in designing, prototyping, and testing various forms of packaging. Design work varies from brand new, napkin sketch to VA/VE of existing products to eliminate product damage and/or reduce cost.
The Packaging Engineer must be a strategic thinker and problem solver. He/she should be well organized, disciplined and self-motivated, with the capability to balance multiple priorities related to NPI, Operations, and Organizational goals. He/she must be able to communicate with internal company personnel, as well as customers, suppliers, and third parties with equal effectiveness and professionalism. What We Are Looking For
• Design, develop, test, qualify and document packaging for 3D Systems products.
• Provide robust design solutions to protect critical systems.
• Collaborates with other Engineering groups to improve or upgrade product protection.
• Evaluates the ability of products to meet performance standards and specifications
• Able to interpret test specifications in order to write test plans as required.
• Manage and perform tests in 3D Systems' ISTA Certified Test Laboratory.
• Build prototype packages, if needed, in the package fabrication shop.
• Work with supply chain team to release packaging designs for production and implement with vendors.
• Identify and capitalize on cost reduction opportunities.
• Work with Supplier Quality Engineers to qualify and troubleshoot issues with the packaging commodity.
• Be a productive member of cross functional development teams across departments.
Experience
• Knowledge and experience with ISTA and ASTM test protocols.
• Experience operating dynamic and transit test equipment.
• Strong knowledge of packaging technology, materials and design principles.
• Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) software with project management skills.
• Background/experience with Product Development.
• Proficient in SolidWorks
Education and Training
• Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
• 5+ years' experience as a Packaging Engineer or similar technical position.
• Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Advise NPI team on early design concepts and potential points of failure.
• Practices continuous improvement methodologies
• Root cause problem solving
• Action oriented with ability to communicate at all levels in the organization.
• Solid knowledge of technical report preparation, engineering documentation, print standards, electrical and mechanical machinery safety
