Job Description:

We are seeking a dynamic and innovative Systems Engineer with a focus on Hardware to join our multi-disciplinary team. In this role, you will be instrumental in developing next-generation metrology systems, transforming innovative concepts into hardware designs, and rapidly iterating prototypes. This position requires close collaboration across various technical fields, including electrical, mechanical, optical, firmware, and software engineering. We are looking for individuals who excel in team environments, can brainstorm big ideas, embrace new technologies, and have the drive to take a concept from prototype to high-volume production.

Pay Range: $130,000- $170,000 Annually (DOE)

Role and Responsibilities
  • Design and develop hardware components, modules, and subsystems for next-generation metrology tools.
  • Collaborate with scientists and engineering teams to create new systems, prototypes, and test fixtures.
  • Develop and execute test plans, build prototypes, and conduct tests to validate hardware design concepts.
  • Manage the entire hardware design process, from initial requirements and feasibility studies to cost analysis, scheduling, conceptual and detailed design, creating detailed drawings, design review presentations, procuring prototype parts, system integration, prototype testing, and final handoff to engineering or manufacturing.
  • Perform risk analysis and implement mitigation strategies using experiments, simulations, or other relevant methods.
  • Develop supporting documentation, such as assembly and test procedures, and proactively address and resolve product issues throughout development phases.
  • Oversee the procurement and management of key suppliers.

Requirements
  • Strong understanding of hardware engineering fundamentals, including design principles, tolerance, error budget, materials, and thermal dynamics.
  • Proficiency in hardware design tools and good modeling and detail drawing practices, including an understanding of GD&T.
  • Experience designing systems for High Vacuum and Ultra-High Vacuum environments.
  • Capable of conducting simulations, including stress, thermal, vibration, and flow analysis.
  • Knowledge of machining processes and some machine shop experience is beneficial.
  • Basic understanding of optics, including reflection, refraction, focusing, polarization, and simple ray tracing.
  • Doctorate (Ph.D.) with no experience, or Master's degree with 3 years of related experience, or Bachelor's degree with 5 years of related experience
