Job Description: Horizon Science Academy Davenport Charter School Board Member
Position Title: Board Member
Reports To: Board Chairperson
Status: Unpaid, Volunteer
Commitment: Part-time, approximately 3-4 hours per month
Residency Requirement: Must be a full-time Iowa resident, preferably in the Quad Cities
Position Summary
The Board of Directors of Horizon Science Academy Davenport, a public charter school, is seeking dedicated and passionate individuals to serve as volunteer Board Members. As a member of the governing body, you will help ensure the school's mission, vision, and values are upheld while providing strategic oversight and guidance on operations, finances, and student outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
1. Governance and Oversight
Participate in developing and approving school policies, strategic plans, and annual goals.
Ensure the school complies with applicable laws, regulations, and charter agreements.
Collaborate with Concept Schools, a non-profit charter management organization, who through its award-winning Concept Model, provides comprehensive academic, financial, and operational services.
2. Financial Stewardship
Review and approve the annual budget, financial reports, and major expenditures.
Ensure sound financial management and accountability of public funds.
3. Community Engagement and Advocacy
Act as an ambassador for the school, promoting its mission within the broader community.
Support fundraising initiatives and seek partnerships to enhance school resources.
4. Board Participation
Attend and actively participate in regular board meetings (typically monthly).
Serve on at least one board committee (e.g., Finance, Governance, Academic Excellence).
Review meeting materials in advance and contribute to informed decision-making.
5. Student Achievement
Monitor academic performance and support initiatives that enhance student success.
Hold the school accountable for delivering high-quality education to all students.
Qualifications
Passion for public education and commitment to Horizon Science Academy Davenport's mission.
Experience or expertise in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable:
Finance or accounting
Education or curriculum development
Law or legal compliance
Fundraising and development
Human resources
Community leadership
Strong communication, collaboration, and decision-making skills.
Willingness to dedicate time and effort to the board's work, including attending training sessions.
Must maintain residence in Iowa, preferably in the Quad Cities area.
