Purpose of Position
To provide training and instruction to COBRE project directors, University PIs, their students and staff in all aspects of instrument use, safety, outcome-specific forms of tissue samples preparation and provide assistance with trouble shooting all aspect of tissue preparation and analysis. Assist with experimental design specifically with regards to application-specific sample preparation techniques, identifying appropriate analytical tools available, resolution restrictions and quantitative morphological techniques. Provide assistance with tissue sample preparation, microtomy and all aspects of general histochemical and antigen-specific immunohistochemical detection.
Duties & Responsibilities
Assist core users in all aspect of sample preparation, care and oversight of instrumentation
Provide current histological techniques including but not limited to tissue-specific fixation methods, paraffin embedding and microtomy, cryomicrotomy, adultramicrotomy, immunohistochemistry, general histochemistry
Operation of a variety of histology instrumentation including automatic tissue processor for paraffin preparations, paraffin microtome, cryostat, bibratome, antigen retrieval and clinical/educational CX22 laboratory microscopes
Duties have been expanded to include confocal microscopy
Physical demands are limited to lifting small loads, i.e., supplies, when restocking the core facility. Weights not expected to exceed 10-15 lbs.
Train histology core users in proper use of histological instrumentation
Provide training and instruction to UND faculty, students, staff and outside users in all aspects of instrument use, safety, outcome-specific forms of tissue sample preparation and provide assistance with trouble shooting all aspects of tissue preparation and analysis
Responsibilities have expanded to provide assistance and training for proper preparation of samples for confocal analysis
Laboratory maintenance
General facility oversight to include general instrument maintenance and cleaning
Maintenance of instrument service notebooks, documentation of instrument use
Document materials expended by users or core personnel in assistance to others
Populate MS Excel spreadsheets with inventory changes, supply sources and catalog numbers
Populate MS Excel spreadsheets with instrument use time and billing
Required Competencies
Knowledge of tissue fixation methods and microtomy
Familiar with the operation and organization of a biology lab
Familiar with spreadsheets and graphing programs
Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel
Proficient in technical writing of SOPs, Protocols, Technical Reports, Laboratory Incident Reports, OOS Investigations and CAPAS
Demonstrated ability to work well with others
Minimum Requirements
Associate's degree in biological, medical laboratory or chemical sciences
Minimum of 6 months of experience in immunohistochemistry, general histochemistry, operation of a variety of histology instrumentation, as demonstrated on resume
Minimum of 6 months of experience in lab equipment maintenance, as demonstrated on resume
Minimum of 6 months of experience with paraffin microtome, cryostat, or related instruments, as demonstrated on resume
Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications
B.A. or B.S. in biological, medical laboratory or chemical sciences
Experience with the training and supervision of other technical staff, undergraduate and graduate students and post docs
