Department Information



One of the first human genetics departments in the country, the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at IU School of Medicine has a rich history of training geneticists and genetic counselors and providing genetic consultation and counseling services. Currently ranked 5th in the nation among Genetics Departments for NIH Funding, received in 2023, the department contributes to the understanding of numerous genetic conditions through the integration of basic research in genetic and genomic mechanisms, translational research in disease models, and clinical trials in rare and common genetic diseases.



Job Summary



This position supports and assists the Principal Investigator and other members of the Lab in conducting sponsored research on the role of genetics in congenital heart defects.


Department-Specific Responsibilities


  • Performs a wide range of complex laboratory and research experiments related to congenital heart defects with a degree of independence.

  • Performs complex techniques or procedures involving animal handling and collection of tissue samples, procurement and breeding of experimental animals, in addition to routine laboratory techniques such as genotyping, DNA and RNA analysis, PCR and histology among others.

  • Collaborates with laboratory personnel; monitor completion of assigned tasks and provide training to research technicians and/or graduate students as needed.

  • Trains laboratory personnel in various techniques and analysis.

  • Assists in preparing completed research reports or analyses on each project phase.

  • Directs or participates in the tabulation and computation of project results, statistics, and figure preparation.

  • Writes results of experiments and present results in meetings. Assist in grant-related activities to obtain funding for research projects as needed.

  • Maintains knowledge trends through readings, conferences, and seminars.

  • Responsible for lab compliance and maintain safety records and obtain special permits as required.

  • Oversees the proper maintenance of laboratory equipment.

  • Participates in protocol development and keep laboratory protocols up to date, including but not limited to the use of vertebrate animals and the use of human specimens.

  • Reviews literature to identify suitable procedures and methods.

General Responsibilities

  • Performs complex and intricate laboratory experiments while following research techniques and procedures.

  • Develops procedures and protocols in collaboration with leadership.

  • Prepares research reports or analyses for projects.

  • Maintains safety records and ensures safety/compliance procedures and protocols are followed.

  • Provides guidance and support to junior-level staff in laboratory operations.

  • May develop, prepare, and coordinate grant applications and grant-related activities to obtain funding for research projects and related work.

  • Bachelor's degree in related field

Working Conditions / Demands



The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Advertised Salary



$50,224.00 - $55,224.00 per year based on experience and internal equity within the department.
