The Tracked Products Engineering Heavy Structures team is currently seeking a Design Engineer for Electric Rope shovels and Draglines. In this position, you will be responsible for the design and analysis of the components along with strong manufacturing and supplier collaboration. Projects will include New Product Introduction (NPI), New Supplier Introduction (NSI), Continuous Product Improvement (CPI), and product maintenance.

What you will do:

This position will focus first and foremost on product and process quality with a zero-defect mindset while also trying to hit the program timeline and cost goals. The Design Engineer will need strong communication skills and great interpersonal skills to interact with other engineering teams, the platform team, purchasing teams, and manufacturing teams. Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Create design concepts and drawings of complex structural systems that meet functional and technical requirements, cost and weight goals, quality initiatives, and manufacturing process requirements.
  • Perform fatigue analysis on the concept using Creo Simulate
  • Support validation activities such as test and field trials.
  • Support and lead APQP activities.
  • Collaborate with external suppliers and internal manufacturing facilities, engineering partners, and the core Product Group

  • Knowledge of a given technology and various application methods.
  • Ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges.
    Provide effective technical solutions to routine functional challenges via sound technical competence, effectively examining implications of events and issues.
  • Effectively perform the technical job aspects, continuously building knowledge and keeping up to date on technical and procedural job components.
  • Apply technical operating and project standards based on achieving excellence in delivered products, technologies and services.
  • Apply current procedures and technologies to help resolve technical issues in one's general area of technical competence.
  • Help others solve technical or procedural problems or issues.
Product Design - MFG:
  • Knowledge of processes, approaches, tools and techniques of product design.
  • Ability to convert customer and market requirements into product design.
  • Monitor processes and procedures of a complex product design to ensure functional requirements are met.
  • Evaluate feedback from customers and consults on functional weaknesses.
  • Controls design and development costs of a proposed product through effective resource coordination.
Product Design and Development:
  • Knowledge of product features.
  • Ability to design, build, and develop a new product, technology, or service from concept through to production.
  • Test and evaluate alternative means of production being considered for use.
  • Use automated tools to design or modify the design of a product.
  • Assist in building a complex prototype of product.

Effective Communications:
  • Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques;
  • Ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.

Education requirements: Bachelor's degree in an accredited Engineering curriculum with 3-5 years of progressive engineering experience OR a master's degree in an accredited Engineering / Technical curriculum.

The Top Candidates will also have:
  • Electric Rope Shovel and Dragline product knowledge.
  • Experience with Caterpillar Engineering Systems (Teamcenter, HVC, EDS, etc.).
  • Previous experience in either NPI or CPI programs.
  • Personal experience in executing APQP.

This position will be located in Tucson, AZ.
